Softball: UNT beats La. Tech & UTEP (Friday)
Softball Wins Twice On Friday

DENTON, Texas (3/4/11) - The North Texas softball team went 2-0 on day one of the Courtyard Classic on Friday afternoon at Lovelace Stadium. The Mean Green defeated UTEP, 7-0 in the first game and came back to defeat Louisiana Tech, 3-2, in the last game of the day.

The Mean Green improves to 8-6 overall and 2-0 in the tournament. Wichita State also won both of its games on Friday. Louisiana Tech and UTA both went 1-1 on day one.

Redshirt freshman Ashley Kirk pitched a two-hitter in the win against UTEP, and two Mean Green homers paced the offense in the second win.

Kirk pitched her second straight complete game against UTEP. She allowed just two hits in seven innings of work and tied a personal best with eight strikeouts.

The Mean Green used a six-run fifth inning to take charge of the first game. Caitlin Grimes gave North Texas an early 1-0 lead in the second inning with an RBI single. Mariza Martinez scored on the play after reaching base with a double.

Martinez knocked in the first run of the fifth inning with a bases-loaded single. Grimes brought in another run with a bases-loaded walk, and freshman Jordan Terry followed with an RBI single. Freshman Brooke Foster brought three more runs home with a bases-clearing triple. The third baseman leads the team with three triples. Only former player Susan Waters has posted more triples in a season (4).

In the second game, Louisiana Tech took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning off two Mean Green errors. Homers by Renae Bromley and Terry in the second inning put North Texas back in control. Bromley tied the game with her first homer of the season, and Terry gave North Texas the lead with her first career home run.

Louisiana Tech threatened in the top of the seventh with two singles. With runners on second and third, Grimes threw out Rachel Allday at third to end the game.

Brittany Simmons (4-4) picked up her fourth win of the season against the Lady Techsters. She allowed two unearned runs off five hits in seven innings of work.

The Mean Green left 10 runners stranded in the 3-2 win against Louisiana Tech.

North Texas returns to action on Saturday, March 5 with two more games against Ole Miss and Wichita State.
