From the Bird’s Nest: “LIVE, FROM THE SUN BELT CONFERENCE, IT’S SATURDAYYYYYY NIIIIII
You know, I really don’t like harping on officials.
I rarely believe that officiating costs a team a game. The one exception might be the Middle Tennessee game when three officials choked on their whistles on an obvious goal-tend which allowed Middle Tennessee to take a one point lead over Louisiana with less than a minute to go in regulation.
But it’s silly for any of us to ignore the 2000 lb elephant in the room.
Saturday night in the Sun Belt is worse this year than ever before.

Anyone watch the ULL at USA game? At the very end of the first half Bob Marlin got called with a Technical when his player MADE a basket. As the USA player (Gary Redus) was shooting his technical free throws he gets called for a technical! How does that happen? Then USA coach Ronnie Arrow gets a technical early in the second half (on TV you could see him say you could give me a warning). Then the refs threw out a fan. Crazy.

Redus got caught talking trash, which he did the whole game. It's ironic it was called at the end, because it should have been called on him way earlier in the game.

The officiating is horrible. I don't know where these officials come from, but they are not Division I officials...

This was one of the worst calls against WKU. This was several years ago when WKU was playing against Arizona at Arizona and we had a great shot at winning (if memory serves, it was a 1 possession game with about a min left) until this happened. Our player was thrown to the ground and we were called for a walk?!?!?!
I guess the Pac10 officials couldn't let Olsen lose that game on his court.

I think Jay points out the number of games each one of these officials have officiated this year and it's not impressive. We've had a number of officials from the SLC this year for some reason and most of them have been terrible. My questions is this, if the conference office wants us to play better programs out of conference, how about supporting your membership with higher quality officiating?

Ive been meaning to bring this topic up for the past couple of weeks, glad someone else did. Theres been so many games this year where i walked away from the arena in outright amazement that the sunbelt officiating could get worse than we already knew it was. Ill give them one bit of credit, at least they ussually make terrible calls for both sides. Its just frustrating and annoying watching games where the officials are waaayyy to involved in controlling the games.

UL #15 and Gary were teammates / friends at Centenary prior to transferring to USA and UL. Both were talking trash all night.....Tell the whole story if you going to tell any of it.

Okay, here is the rest of the story. Gary Redus and Perez both played at Centenary. They exchange trash talk some during the game, but since we are telling the rest of the story, Perez played a whopping 10 minutes and trash talking Redus played 39 minutes....talking crap the whole game. As I said...he should have been "T" long before that call. Oh, Perez went home with the "WIN", and the trash talker went back to the locker room with the "LOSS". And that... is the rest of the story!

The refs have been bad this year. In the past I we would see the refs on the SEC and Big 12 games and at SBC games. Every game for years I have looked to see how many of the refs I have seen calling our games before. This year I have seen almost no faces that ring a bell.
The have been bad but, like commented above, have called it bad both ways. Not enough though.
What will happen in Hot Springs? Are we going to travel to see a foul fest?
stAte Fan or someone else in the know, what happened? Where did we lose our refs from last year?

It was a combination of a couple of things:
First, we have a new supervisor of officials this year, who comes from the East Coast. He's brought in a lot of new officials who also call in the Colonial, OVC, A Sun, ACC and So Con.
Second, a lot of the officials you refer to that you see on television were unwilling to do SUn Belt Games on Saturday. Many of the new guys who call in bigger conferences said they were willing to do some Saturday games, even tho they get paid less. So the Commish fired the guys who were unwilling to work Saturdays.
Hence a lot of new guys this year.
My problem is the disparity in fouls called. There were 98 free throws shot in our game vs. Middle Tenn. Against South Alabama, neither team got into the double bonus in the second half and overtime.
Now, those are the extremes, but you get my drift.

Coach Arrow announced on his radio show today that the league office called and told him that after weeks of discussion and review, it was ruled that officials got the call wrong at the the end of the USA-ULL game when the ULL player threw it in the back court and it was ruled legal. They said the rule that they followed was a little ambiguous and they have since clarified it. That call was a crucial call in the outcome of the game.

At the time the game was tied with about 30 seconds left. Jags should have had the ball and a chance to play for the last shot. They ended up losing in OT.

Maybe we'll be lucky enough to meet up again in Little Rock.

Yes, SBC officiating has been terrible all year. Win or lose, I continue to say it.

RE: From the Bird’s Nest: “LIVE, FROM THE SUN BELT CONFERENCE, IT’S SATURDAYYYYYY NIIIIII
I may be way off base here, but I think some of it has to do with officials that generally work major conference games. The worst officiating performances I've seen in SBC games this year have been from Doug Sirmons and Tom Eades. It's like they think, "well this is just a Sun Belt game, so I'll half-ass it." Tom Eades needs to retire. Doug Sirmons just pisses me off. I don't know how he's allowed to call college basketball games. He takes great pride in assessing weakass technical fouls.
Doug Sirmons is a *******. I really can't stand Doug Sirmons. He was the one that made the call in the ULL game, then emphatically explained why he was right with a smug smile on his face. Now it turns out he was wrong. I do not like Doug Sirmons. Doug Sirmons can't handle it. He throws fans out of games because he can't take people calling him on his awful officiating. Doug Sirmons is a little girl.
