What's the deal with CBS?
It seems like they barely show any Big East games. It seems to be primarily Big Ten, Big 12, and ACC games. Syracuse and Georetown, two of the Big East's biggest TV draws aren't on at all this year. Does ESPN block these games from them? Or does CBS just not prefer the Big East? You'd think CBS would want the best games, and I, along with many of you, would agree the best is the Big East!

1/22 Tennessee at Connecticut
1/30 Duke at St. John's
2/5 St. John's at UCLA
2/19 Notre Dame at West Virginia
2/26 Syracuse at Georgetown
2/27 Pittsburgh at Louisville
3/5 Villanova at Pittsburgh

True, but I think the point may be (rightly or wrongly, I don't know) that it seems that CBS is far more interested in OOC games for the Big East than they are conference games. And this may have something to do with the fact that the entire BET is on ESPN whereas CBS gets the championship game of some of the other conferences.

Of course, it could also have to do with the fact that the Big East was suppose to be "down" this year. 03-wink

Neil

Unless I'm mistaken, aren't the last 4 games on that list conference games? That tends to shoot a small hole in that theory, matt...

RE: What's the deal with CBS?
CBS has the Pac-10 and Big Ten finals of the "power" conferences, along with the MVC and A-10 finals, so I don't think its that. Here's their schedule for the year

12/4 Kentucky @ North Carolina 12:30pm
12/11 St. Louis @ Duke 12pm
12/18 South Carolina @ Ohio St. AND Stanford @ Butler 2pm (split)
Texas vs. North Carolina (@ Greensboro) 4pm
12/31 Kentucky @ Louisville 12pm
1/9 Kansas @ Michigan 4:30pm
1/15 Maryland @ Villanova 1pm
1/16 Purdue @ West Virginia 1:30pm
1/22 Ohio St. @ Illinois 12pm
Tennessee @ Connecticut AND Stanford @UCLA 2pm (split)
Texas @ Kansas 4pm
1/29 Florida @ Mississippi St. AND Minnesota @ Purdue 1pm (split)
1/30 Duke @ St. John's 1pm
2/5 Illinois @ Northwestern AND St. John's @ UCLA 1pm (split)
2/6 Michigan St. at Wisconsin 1pm
2/12 Kentucky @ Vanderbilt 1pm
2/13 Purdue @ Illinois 1pm
2/19 Notre Dame @ West Virginia AND Georgia @ Tennessee 1pm (split)
2/20 Ohio St. at Purdue 1pm
2/26 Syracuse @ Georgetown 12pm
BYU @ San Diego St. 2pm
Florida @ Kentucky 4pm
2/27 Pittsburgh @ Louisville 2pm
Big Ten Wildcard 4pm
3/5 Kansas @ Missouri 12pm
Michigan St. @ Michigan AND PAC-10 Wildcard 2pm (split)
Villanova @ Pittsburgh 4pm
Duke @ UNC 8pm
3/6 Kentucky @ Tennessee 12pm
MVC Championship 2pm
Big Ten Wildcard 4pm
3/12 C-USA Championship 11:30am
Big Ten Semifinal 1:30pm
Big Ten Semifinal 4pm
Pac-10 Championship 6pm
3/13 Atlantic 10 Championship 1pm
Big Ten Championship 3:30pm

They only have one ACC conference game (Duke-UNC) and generally don't do many ACC games. Same w/Big 12 and Pac-10 because they have to sublicense the games (Raycom: ACC, Big 12: ESPN, Pac-10: FSN). CBS only has regular season contracts with the Big East, Big Ten and SEC.

Based on home team:

ACC - 4
Atlantic 10 - 1 (ESPN sublicense)
Big 12 - 2
Big East - 9
Big Ten - 14
C-USA - 1 (ESPN sublicense)
Horizon - 1 (ESPN sublicense)
MVC - 1 (ESPN sublicense)
MWC - 1 (CBS College sublicense)
Pac-10 - 4
SEC - 5

...and that's half the number of Big Ten conference games they are showing. 03-wink

And they basically have the same contract with the Big Ten as they have with the Big East.

But like I said, I think this year's CBS schedule was more influenced by the fact that the Big Ten was suppose to be way up while the Big East was thought to be no better than 4th best conference coming into the season.

Cheers,
Neil

RE: What's the deal with CBS?
Don't forget that 3 of the 14 games are conference tournament games for the Big Ten.

The numbers, to be honest, are no different than prior seasons. Has nothing to do w/up or down conferences. Went back a looked at prior seasons. Big East typically has 3-4 OOC games in addition to 5-6 conference games. Big Ten, OTOH, usually has their CBS schedule heavy on conference games.

2009-10 (45 games)
ACC: 4 (3 conference games, didn't have Duke-UNC)
Big 12: 2 (both conference games)
Big East: 9 (4 OOC, 5 conference)
Big Ten: 14 (3 OOC, 8 conference, 3 conf. tourney)
Pac-10: 5 (4 conference, 1 conf. tourney)
SEC: 8 (3 OOC, 5 conference)

A-10, MVC, C-USA - 1 each

Sorry, after I wrote this, I realizes one of the SU v GU games was on CBS. Still seems like they don't air a lot of conference games...but I feel that ESPN might protect those for Big Monday and their Saturday games.

CBS is to show a minimum 14 men's BE games a year as part of the deal.

A-10, MVC, C-USA - 1 each

Then the original point may have been correct. For CBS, they don't value BE conference games as much which likely means their data supports the notion that Big East teams need to be playing Big Ten and SEC teams in order to garner ratings rather than each other.

Cheers,
Neil

I don't think paranoia has anything to do with it. If a major network consistently prefers to show OOC games for one conference while showing conference games for the other that's telling.

It gives us an idea as to why perhaps Big East bb hasn't been paid on the same scale as ACC bb in the past.

Neil

CBS is to show a minimum 14 men's BE games a year as part of the deal. OOC games = 1 appearance, conference games = 2.

Not 14 games. 14 appearances for Big East teams.

http://bigeast.org/AbouttheBIGEAST/Television.aspx

Quote:The BIG EAST and CBS Sports announced in June of 2006 an increase inthe number of contests involving conference men's basketball teams from a minimum of 11 to 14 each season, and ensure that the BIG EAST would be one of a few conferences with guaranteed exposure in women's basketball on CBS Sports each year. The agreement began in 2007-08 and will continue through 2012-13.

So they could either do 14 OOC games, 7 conference games or a mix.

CBS in line with the contract.

I think it has more to do with the fact that ESPN is the primary rights holder, and keeps most of the marquee games for themselves. There is also the issue that nearly half of the BE teams are not primary tenants in their buildings, and have a harder time getting use of the buildings on the days that CBS likes to show games (saturday and Sunday afternoon), and after ESPN takes their pick of games, there are few left for CBS to choose from.
