The close games continue in BE basketball
Notre Dame held off UConn 73-70 in South Bend this evening.

Pitt led most of the game in Providence before the Friars took a late 4 point lead, only to see Pitt end the game on a run to win 83-79.

WVU went up to Chicago and barely held on against DePaul 67-65.

So many teams are capable of beating anyone in the league that good teams are going to be around .500 when March arrives. A team like Providence is better than I expected but has a virtual glass ceiling of the NIT. You have to wonder how their players respond if they continue losing close games, but they are not your normal 0-3 club. They've lost by 7 to Syracuse, 4 to Pitt, and 2 to St John's.

St John's 3-0
Syracuse 2-0
Pitt 2-0
Cincy 2-0
Villanova 1-0
Marquette 1-0
Notre Dame 2-1
Seton Hall 1-1
UConn 1-2
Georgetown 1-2
WVU 1-2
UofL 0-0
Rutgers 0-1
South Florida 0-2
Providence 0-3
DePaul 0-3

Unfortunately, USF isn't one of them.

Providence is like Marquette of last year. Look at Marquette's score last year... all of them were very close. Keno Davis is doing a fantastic job.

Pitt had 22 turnovers, 22 personal fouls, and didn't score for 7 1/2 minutes in the first half and Providence had 16 steals!!--but after blowing a 10-point lead, Pitt closed on a 11-3 run to win it. ANY Big East road win is to be cherished!

Georgetown could end up 1-3 in conference after this weekend. Of course, so could WVU. I never would have predicted that for either school, when WVU goes to Georgetown on Saturday...

The two games weren't as close tonight.

Louisville rolls Seton Hall 73-54. With their depleted roster, the Pirates appear headed for a 14th or 15th place finish.

Marquette gets a 73-65 road win at Rutgers.

St John's 3-0
Syracuse 2-0
Pitt 2-0
Cincy 2-0
Marquette 2-0
Villanova 1-0
UofL 1-0
Notre Dame 2-1
UConn 1-2
Georgetown 1-2
WVU 1-2
Seton Hall 1-2
Rutgers 0-2
South Florida 0-2
Providence 0-3
DePaul 0-3

I like what I'm seeing out of this Mike Rice coached squad so far. The intensity is there, the defense is pretty good, but the talent is just lacking. He's definitely getting the most out of these players and with some luck we should be able to at least sniff the NIT.

You guys have some talent there right now, I like Dane Miller. He is a local product here in Rochester and I was hoping that SU would recruit him, but they just didnt have any room. Glad he stayed in the BE. Hes a good one there at Rutgers.

That's true we have some, we just lack the depth that an upper two-thirds BE squad has.

Be sure to tune in and watch UC beat Xavier tonight - it will probably be intense as all UC-Xavier games are.

Looks like Cincy is for real. I didnt think that Cronin had it in him. I'm glad I was wrong.

15-0 going into Villanova. If Yancy brings it again, then UC can win on Sunday.

I'm excited about our 15-0 start but we still haven't beat anyone who will make the NCAA tournament unless they win a conference tournament. We'll see over the next few weeks how much we've got.

And in Cronin's defense he walked into a job with 1 scholarship player in the toughest league ever created. I think he's a done a much better job than he gets credit for and will be a legit candidate for BE coach of the year.

WVU-Georgetown is on deck...

Can the Mountaineers catch Georgetown napping in DC, or will the Hoyas come out ready to play after their loss to the Johnnies?

Both teams look middlin'. Sloppy basketball game. Turnover fest.

WVU came out on top. That's all that matters to me...

But I see signs of progress. I just wonder if Huggs will ever get Kilicli to stop committing all those stupid fouls on defense. If he does, that kid is going to be a monster, and will take a lot of pressure off KJ...
