Winning sports program and college applicants
Interesting article regarding UCONN. Many students applied because of UCONN's winning sports programs. Another big reason why great athletic programs are important.

Couple of things I took out of the article. UCONN is much harder to get into today than in the past. A ton of out state applications with average cost of almost $39K a year. In-state is close to $23K per year. Things really got expensive over the years. I don't even want to think about how much it will cost per year for colleges 18 years into the future.

I was curious to see how much it now costs to goto my undergrad (Rensselaer Poly Inst). 'Back in the day' (early 90s), tuition cost ~ $12.5k, nowadays, it costs ~ $40k. Ouch!

Schools that use the Common Application tend to inflate their admissions numbers.

RE: Winning sports program and college applicants
Winning athletic programs definitely help a school gain exposure, and I think one can safely say lead to some number of increase in applicants. I have family that work in higher education and I know that Oklahoma's numbers went up big time from out of state applicants the year after they won the 2000-2001 football national title.

TCUs application numbers have soared over the last 10 years, I think partly due to success on the field and additionally that TCU has invested a lot of money into campus facilities and the undergraduate business program has flown up the businessweek undergrad program rankings up to #30 (from probably around 70, 10 years ago). The Schieffer School of Journalism also continues to help raise the profile of TCU.

For example, TCU received 6,137 applications for entrance to TCU for the Fall of 2003. For entrance in the Fall of 2010 TCU received over 13,000 applications. In addition, the number of applications received from outside Texas has grown in similar fashion.

Both applications received & alumni giving increases substantially when a team makes postseason play, particularly for smaller schools & the men's basketball tournament.

I could have used the scholarship at any school in the state. But I pretty much grew up at Mountaineer Field, and that decided that...
