+1.

Everytime House Hunters is in TX I just drool over what they're looking at for not much money.

My coast guard buddies give me sh*t for watching House Hunters, good to know I'm not alone. I think it's cool when in one episode, someone's looking for a 3 bedroom for $1MM in New York and getting a 5br 3b for $500,000 in Texas. They need to do one in NC so I know what we're working with, I'm pretty sure Asheville would be pretty nice.

Is Houston my only option? I don't mind small town

Here are some options

Although I don't know about oil companies everywhere.

I'm kinda partial to what's now called the exurbs.

I'm in Montgomery, Texas, 4/3/2, 2800 sq.ft., lakefront with boat dock, $350K. When I still worked in Houston I was 55 minutes from my office if I dodged rush hour, 1 hr 15 min at 5 pm. The average Houston commute is supposed to be 45 minutes, so I figured that spending an extra 30 minutes a day to be able to sit on the back porch with a glass of wine and watch the sun set over the lake wasn't a bad swap. I can go to a concert or play or ballet or opera or evening Astros/Texans/Rockets/Rice game and still be home before midnight. Being on the lake it's a resort area, so there are a decent range of choices for restaurants and entertainment, and there's a large hotel/resort that's being redeveloped as an upscale destination (spa, varied restaurants, sports bar, water park, golf, tennis, etc.) about 300 yards across a corner of the lake from me. Plus I can always go to Houston if I want something more in those regards. I grew up in a small town, so I enjoy all the small town stuff, too--HS football games, antique festivals, fishing tournaments, crawfish boils, chili cook-offs, etc. I enjoy travel, particularly internationally, and IAH is 45 minutes. Our climate compares favorably with Houston, we're pretty consistently about 4 degrees (F) cooler and about 10% lower humidity, and at my place there's a good breeze off the lake at least 50% of the time. That's just enough to make mid-summer days bearable--there are very few days when you can't be outdoors doing something active. It did snow four times last year--but that's an aberration.

As for oil company jobs, Houston is full of them, Anadarko is in the Woodlands (25-30 mins), there are a number of division/district offices in the Conroe area (15-20 minutes), and there are a large number of independents arrayed across suburban north Houston (~45 minutes). There are also any number of oilpatch support companies of one variety or another all over.

There are places like this around DFW, Austin, and San Antonio. Probably more high-tech than oilpatch jobs in Austin, but the rest would have plenty of both.

You won't like it, anyway, and we're not interested in changing to suit you.

Th city of Austin is about as liberal a city in the US and our economy is booming. Matter of fact, our economy was showed very few signs of the recession. So what you meant to say it was, "Yeah, if you're a liberal progressive, go to Austin. You'll meet a bunch of like minded people that also have an entrepreneurial spirit."

I'm sure all the tax dollars pouring in don't mean anything. 01-wingedeagle

Not everything is rosy here, as the state is facing an estimated 25 billion dollar budget gap.
