Scratch Mitch Daniels off the list
Quote:Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels opened the door Thursday to supporting both a value added tax and a tariff on imported oil, bold proposals that could cause trouble for him with conservatives as he flirts with a long-shot bid for the presidency.

On the brighter side, he's got Mach's vote.

Any Politician supporting a VAT deserves a one way ticket down that hole in Chile.

I would favor both VAT and an energy tax, under the right circumstances. Those circumstances would include:

1. Reducing other taxes by the amount that these would produce, or more, so that you achieve at least revenue neutrality.
2. Reducing spending. Cato has identified close to $600 billion that is wasted; a not insignificant portion of that is corporate welfare that becomes unnecessary if the marginal corporate tax rates are reduced to a level competitive with the rest of the developed world.

Since #1 and #2 will NEVER happen under any circumstances, you therefor oppose a VAT and Energy tax.

Like saying, I support an energy tax when domestic electricity is provided by 100% nuclear, sun, and wind power. Things really can be black and white, really.

Mitch Daniels = political suicide.

Reduce the income tax to zero and I would get on board.
