California's Coalinga State Sex Offender Hospital Costs Tax Payers 400 mill to Build & 175k per Inmate Yr
Construction on the Coalinga State Sex Offender Hospital was completed in the summer of 2005. The hospital sits on 320 acres and is comprised of 1.2 million gross square feet of floor space. At full capacity, the facility will house 1,500 individuals and employ approximately 1,600 staff.

Controversial Sex Offender Hospital Costs Tax Payers

ORIGINAL AIRDATE: 9/27/2010

Article Here w/ Pictures

A spacious sparkling new mall, a lovely jogging path and state of the art medical care. No, it's not the latest five star retirement community. It's actually a controversial home for sexual predators.

Dr. Maria Piccillo said, "We are now coming up on what we call the main mall."

INSIDE EDITION's Lisa Guerrero got an exclusive look inside central California's Coalinga State Hospital, where sex offenders who have already done their time in prison are sent because they are deemed likely to attack again are sent. Most are never allowed to leave.

Guerrero asked, "What is this?"

"Casino night," said Dr. Piccillo.

"They have different activities in the evening hours," said Piccillo.

"Coalinga Idol. It's like American Idol singing," said Guerrero.

Dr. Maria Piccillo oversees treatment at the facility where residents also enjoy movie night and theme parties.

A BBC documentary film crew captured a Halloween celebration that included singing the theme song to The Addams Family TV show.

And there is a beautiful garden that is also the work of sexual predators.

Guerrero asked, "This is part of a gardening therapy?"

"Gardening therapy, yeah. It's that use of time to really develop pro-social and healthy ways of spending time," said Dr. Piccillo.

Rodney Short served 17 years in prison for rape, then was sent directly to Coalinga, where it costs about $175,000 a year to house one person.

Short said, "I get to play tennis, run around the track, and lift weights."

Treatment at Coalinga includes top-notch medical care that many families in America could only dream about. And that's not all.

Sanford Jones, a convicted child molester, told INSIDE EDITION that, like many of the other sexual predators, he is allowed to keep X-rated material.

"You're allowed to have adult legal pornography here. Is that true?" asked Guerrero.

"Yes," replied Jones.

Ernest Marshall helps run clinical operations at the hospital.

Guerrero said to Marshall, "I walk around this faciility and I see casino night. I see a barber shop. What is the purpose for having such a nice environment for these folks?"

Marshall replied, "Our goal is to create safer communities. You don't do that by increased punishment. That was the prison part. This is hopefully the rehabilitating part."

Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas is fuming over the cushy environment

"Frankly, it's startling. This is a complete boon doggle. This is a huge wast of taxpayer money," said Rackauckas.

It cost nearly $400 million to build that facility.

Here is the deal, this is to be treatment not prison, due to lack of legislation the indefinate lock up was thought up. Now personal opinions aside, the justice system was put in place to give out sentences and those sentences should have been made strict. Now I don't think anyone gives themselves sentences, from traffic tickets on up. So now they are here for the make up plan, repayment for what they aleady done paid for. How about the victims? Well how about the victim of a Dui fatality? The number one goal here was to keep them from society "until" they are deemed safe. Well, they are away from society. Now, who is going to pay? not them they didn't make reservations. We cannot have our cake and eat it too.
now the facility is a bit too fancy, however, they had nothing to do with it. And the "maybe they should of thought about it before they did their offense." I don't think people pick their problems or prays to GOD to have their problems so they can get the party started. Do your crime, do your time? well, that is unless it is this type crime. I say strict punishments, no plea deals and stick to them and this make up deal won't be a factor. I don't see where it says any one crime is more haneous than the other. You cannot have freedom if you don't have equality.

Hello, new here? If so, don't talk about something you know nothing about. We railed on those pedophile priests for weeks. Start with page 1, then talk. Otherwise, you're speaking out of your ass.

So, um, what sparked your interest enough to create an account here on a sport's board and automatically hit the Spin Room, and specifically one on sex offenders? Kinda odd, don'tcha think? As for hypocrisy, welcome to Earth.

..and you seem to take issue with something. What? I've yet to find out. I think this is a waste of f'n taxpayer money. Pedophiles and sex offenders have some of the highest recidivism rates of any criminal. They shouldn't be catered to and pampered. They should be in general population with the rest of the murderers and violent criminals.

Who here was defending pedophile priests? What's your beef? and exactly what were you searching yahoo for. Duplicate that search. If you haven't noticed Cali is bankrupt. Soon to be bailed out by the rest of us. And this hospital is on the hit list.

No, the story aired on Inside edition, and I wanted to read on it, unlike others who just go by what people say. WTF is on your mind? OOOh an intimidation tactic for people who don't want to learn, which is why we have so many problems today, people ask questions, instead of getting answers they get "WTF" is on your mind. Truth is on my mind.

I don't think anyone was defending priests, My question was why did they get the free pass, not on a register list and still roaming around. And bankrupt, well again, thank those who didn't get it right the first time. WE are so hypocritical, we rather pay three times more and still get it wrong than to do things right the first time. None of this repayment plan, and that is all it is.

They already did that, This is their after payment, payment plan. The issue I have is simple, u do ur sentence you are done unless you commit another crime, now they have a high recidivism, so do drunk drivers, which the one who killed 2 of my family members had 14 dUIs prior to their death. And I imagine Murderers have more victims that we don't know about, of course they aren't talking.
