Quote:Teachers' unions say they're open to the discussion of longer classroom time, but they also say that pay needs to be part of the conversation.
Could this be payback to the unions for their support? Obama proposes a longer school year knowing the unions will want more green and then he gives it to them. Slick.

I agree, if only we had giant government-funded buildings filled with nothing but books that you could take home and read for free.

RE: This should hurt Obama's popularity with the young people
Well, my wife is a teacher.
A little longer day, say 30 min in the AM and 30 min in the PM, would probably go over OK. Good teachers would use the time well. And go to school a week earlier, maybe end a week later, there probably wouldn't be too many complaints. Some buts, though, all rather broad brush:
- It's becoming better understood that all kids need more sleep, and that perhaps kids perform better later in the day. So a day that starts earlier may not see any real benefit, if they are stumbling along like zombies.
- Extra-curricular activities already run through 9pm for many families. Does a longer school day make that 9:30pm or 10pm?
So, yes I know you are all foaming at the mouth in rightous indignation that these damn kids should just wake up earlier, because I was up early and my dad was up early and my grandpa milked cows before even going to school, and if there is a concern that after school activities go to late into the evening then don't do so many things blah blah blah.
I get it. I do. But those are real world problems affecting real world school districts and families. The teachers can probably be brought into line over time and over new contracts, but can the family?
