THANK YOU!!!!! I hate how the distinction is often lost on conservatives.
BTW, you guys think these machines just appeared on 9/12/01? They've had x-ray machines for decades.
To me the biggest aviation "threat" is a bomb in checked baggage, and not the "hijacker."
So far we haven't had female terrorists insert bombs up their birth canals like the Russians have had to deal with.
Since 9/12/01 anyone trying to hijack a plane would have to fight off every passenger on the plane before they made it to the cockpit door.
Checked bags go into an x-ray machine as well. If something looks fishy, they open it up.
Then why do the suitcases full of cocaine keep getting through on flights from the Carribean?
$$$$ to a baggage handler to get a bag on a flight (psst its cocaine, here is $10K) but in this case it doesn't go "blow" it goes "boom."
You are correct, the checked bags get X rayed, but this is the weak link

What seems to be lost on conservatives is that tyranny is tyranny. Why would I fight so hard to keep my rights from the gov't, only to hand them off to a business entity?
You should be equally appalled at unnecessary bureaucracy and regulations that come from an corporation or industry as you are the gov't.
The only way around those from a business is to have competition. So, if you're happy to be inspected by Airline A, but Airline B has similar flights but no inspection, then I guess we can both be happy. But, when A and B collude, or Airline A maneuvers to prevent B from competing in the marketplace (including thru regulation) then I'm disgusted by the thought of surrendering rights. It certainly is no "privilege".
Yes...Many businesses hide behind government regulation to restrict competition and at the same time complain about it. GD hypocrites!
The marketplace is perfectly capable of providing security for aircraft without the help of the government. We ALL got our asses sucked into another giant bureaucracy after 9/11....and....as usual...FEAR was the motivating factor. Damn near every time government expands, it is because the convince us that we NEED it.. The fact is...we do NOT need it. The marketplace and its response to signals is all we really need.

A few weeks ago I had to travel to NJ for a funeral. I had some expensive crystal my family in NJ wanted and I wrapped them in towels and put them in a carry on bag. When I got to John Wayne Airport (man o man were there some hot babes there) I had no problem going through the scanner and went right through. Since I got there early and the security lines were small I decided to to back outside and have a smoke, when I came back in the crystal in my carry on set off all kinds of bells and me and the bag were searched by 6 TSA folks. I had a stop over in Minneapolis and did the smoke thing again and when I went through the line I told them in advance I had crystal in the bag and they said it was no problem. TSA's consistency is frightening. The airport in Minneapolis is more like a mall than an airport - you can buy a tux there.

i imagine everyone has a story about how nail clippers set off alarms in one airport and nothing in another, or something like that. Their inconsistency is indeed frightening

The TSA is a joke. Their "Red Team" which attempts to foil the systems is effective in doing so almost 1/2 the time. It is all security theater designed to give middle class bureaucrats a job and make it seem as if you are safe.

Their Red Team got a disarmed .45 through the Security Checkpoint at Houston Hobby.
All they did was "retrain and counsel" the screeners.

RE: TSA requirements
Well yesterday I went thru the full pat-down instead of going thru the x-ray backscatter machine.
Frankly, they seemed annoyed at the whole ordeal, so that alone was worth it.
Of course I got the standard info that this was no worse than some exposure to TV.

I forgot to mention my lighter made it through security every time. Granted there's only a small amount of metal on it but one time I put it in the tray with my sneakers, wallet and smokes and it was very visible. Not sure if lighters are allowed or not but my wife was pissed. On the flip side I couldn't take a bottle of water past security and this was an expensive bottle since I bought it in one of the shops on the concourse and then took it outside with me.
BTW, at Newark a newspaper, pack of smokes and a bottle of water cost me $16.35.

I spent a lot of time in MSP when I was working on some oil and gas deals in North Dakota. It is absolutely one of my favorite airports.
