The GTS Government Diet
So in the other thread I just listed stuff off the top of my head ... here's the specifics:

US Departments

Department of Agriculture
Entirely eliminate. Strategic seed stockpile stays goes to DoD. Forestry service stays incorporated into DoI, but I suspect that isn't necessary.

Department of Commerce
Mostly Eliminate. Economic statistics stays. PTO stays. NOAA moves to DoI.

Department of Defense
Entirely Keep. Scale back operations.

Department of Education
Entirely Eliminate.

Department of Energy
Entirely Eliminate. Move the NNSA to the DoD. I suspect many of the national labs would be absorbed into the DoD.

Department of Health and Human Services
Mostly Eliminate. Keep CDC, FDA

Department of Homeland Security
Entirely Eliminate.

Department of Housing and Urban Development
Entirely Eliminate.

Department of the Interior
Entirely Keep.

Department of Justice
Mostly Keep. INTERPOL eliminated. Drug divisions eliminated. ATF and US Marshalls jobs should already be done by FBI, they are both eliminated as well.

Department of Labor
Entirely Eliminate.

Department of State
Mostly Eliminate. Eliminate all parts not pertaining to diplomacy, US citizens abroad, consulates, and ambassadors.

Department of Transportation
Mostly Eliminate. Keep FHA, FAA, FRA, though FRA should be nearly non-existant, and FHA should be almost entirely consumed with Interstates.

Department of the Treasury
Mostly Eliminate. Only keep Mint, Debt Service,

Department of Veterans Affairs
Entirely Keep.

Independent Agencies and Government Corporations

Everything that aint Green gets eliminated ....

As a result, budget is instantly balanced, federal debt would be surpluses within a few decades. To get us out of the economic funk, a 2-year FICA holiday combined with market driven interest rates and a commodity backed currency that encourages saving which creates capital and discourages debt and malinvestment.

America would return to it's glory days in less than 30 years.

RE: The GTS Government Diet
You want to scale back the DoD, but you've added portions of two Cabinet level Departments to it's roll? Plus, what are you going to do with the legitimate security services provided by DHS? And if you are looking to make a tough choice, why keep Veterans Affairs untouched? It's been a poster boy for a badly run Department in the past.

How could you get rid of the GSA and OPM without exponentially growing every other remaining Cabinet or agency? The GSA and OPM are essentially the HR Representative and Corporate Services for the US government.

I am working with you on this list, let's just flesh it out a little more....

I agree w/ a lot of those.

You leave things like NIST and NASA unmentioned.

Also, one must wonder why the NNSA and NRC both still exist.

Anyway, I have my doubts about absorbing the DoE labs into DoD. I'd rather see a Dept of Sci and Tech. Fold NASA, NIST, DoE, NIH, EPA and CDC under it. Also probably need a computer science/cybersecurity division. I'd like to see FBI contract to these labs and eliminate some redundancy. It would also allow for more concrete standards in forensics. Similarly the DOI/USDA should contract to them.

NSF I'm unsure about. I think they serve a role.

RE: The GTS Government Diet
Scanned it quickly, but two things jumped out:

1)Federal Maritime Commission - Don't know exactly what they are, but from the brief description, it sounds like a department that actually has an important purpose. I mean, overseas/foreign commerce is something the federal government is constitutionally established to do, right?

2) Federal Retirement Thrift Investment Board - you'd mess with a lot of people's retirement plans, especially military personnel.

That's great that that budget is balance, but our unemployment just jumped to 35%!

Now we have to run the illegals out of the country so that our now unemployed govt workers can take their rightful place in the fields of the good ole USA.
