Job market observation
We cut back from nearly 250 employees to around 95-105 mid 2009 due to loss of contracts. The worse part about this is we can now get just as much work accomplished with less than half the payroll. We now have more contracts than ever and havent had to add but maybe 15 employees since.

Were most companies overstaffed to begin with?

Overstaffing is not an inherent problem. It allows a company to offer a good work life balance, it allows a company to ensure that there are enough people to answer the phones and to do the job right.

So yes, I know for instance among my peer companies, we were all overstaffed in many ways.

Luckily my industry wasn't hit by the recession like so many others, so we've maintained staffing levels. In fact we are hiring right now for over 400 positions across the country.

What's the problem you ask? Housing. People can't afford to take the loss on the house in order to move to the jobs.

Maybe people are willing to do more work (and save their jobs) than they were when times were great.

Also, the company might not be charging as much for their contracts (since others might not be able to pay as much, or they don't have as big a payroll to foot). So, its not indicating that the company is now making more money. They could be making about the same profits after the trade off in salary/income.

i think you'll find that a lot of companies are learning how to work more efficiently. It's just like how households learn how to live on less money
