I was raised in a Catholic family and that cult thing is why I drifted into atheism. My parents musta felt the same way and wanting to no longer be in a cult they became devote Jehovah's Witnesses - don't ask. I will say all the Witnesses I've met are genuinely nice people who are always willing to help each other and how far they'll go to help is amazing.

i'm sure they are nice people. most religious people are. it's not like i think catholics are jerks or anything. One of my best friends from college is catholic and while she's a totally nice person, her religious views are just weird. Catholocism just seems like a make-it-up-as-you-go-along religion. Before lent she told me that her sacrifice was that she was going to eat less. That's an odd sacrifice in itself, but i was like ok go for it. 2 days into lent, my friends and i are at a dining hall and she goes back for a second plate + dessert, and i said 'what happened to eating less for lent, and she said 'well i was hungry.' I was amazed. it just seemed to defeat the point

One of the oddities of the Catholic faith I had problems with is that they treat murder and missing church on Sundays as a mortal sin - both which can be washed off your soul by going to confession. Then there's how much the religion changed throughout the centuries - how does a religion change unless it's revising its business plan?

and while most religious people are nice, you'll never see a Jehovah's Witness committing a crime like the Catholic Italians and Mexicans do. Drugs? Absolutely not. While their faith is a little quirky, they don't pretend they're something they're not. I would imagine most of the drug cartel murderers are Catholics - bad ones - but still Catholics.

I respect people who have faith and I would never criticize most religions. But I do have reservations about Revs Wright, Sharpton, Jackson, and most of what I;ve heard about Islam.

confession is another problem i have with Catholicism. How is a regular, mortal man able to forgive your sins? In christianity you ask god for forgiveness and only he can forgive your sins.

Also, the catholic church seems like more of a business than a religion to me.

Burning a bunch of Qurans is careless, reckless behavior, bordering on a hate crime.

I see the burning of the Qurans for what it is, an act to show that America will not live in fear of what the extremists might do. Shame on those who condemn this but call similar acts involving other religions "Free Speech".

Allow me to lay some libertarianism (social liberal, fiscal conservative) on ya ...

Do you live in New York City?

If No: It's none of your g*****n business. Just like how New Yorkers don't tell you how you should be zoning where you live.

If Yes: It's still none of your g*****n business. Private property rights are essential to freedom. If you want to protest, buy an adjoining property and dedicate it to an alternative viewpoint.

Burning the (Quran? Koran?) ... protected free speech, though perhaps performed by somebody who has some bigotry issues. They could make their point in a better way.

RE: Burn baby burn!!!
Probably the best Op-Ed column on this whole thing I've read thus far...

Quote:If Muslim sensibilities are so tender they can't ignore the bizarre rants of an insignificant American fanatic then this is a culture with a serious anger management issue, and one the West can't help with.

There's no way to head-off every potential slight to Islam. Last time it was Danish cartoons, this time it's a Pentecostal pew jumper who lays down his snakes to strike a match.

Tomorrow, an atheist in Italy may name his dog Mohammad, or a biker in Australia will have a likeness of the prophet tattooed on his backside.

The only answer is for Islam to grow up. Religion invites antagonism; get used to it.

First, free speech does not necessarily extend to private property. People can be barred from certain establishments merely for speaking their mind if the proprietors do not wish them to be there. Likewise they can allow for full freedom of speech if they so desire.

Why does ncaabbs have admins and mods? Well for one there would be no site if there were no leaders like gts who kept things running. But also there are plenty of spammers, and unsavory types who would quickly drown the site in garbage making it unreadable, I ban spammers and delete spam posts at least once a week. Beyond that there are poster who wish to do nothing but make other users experience miserable. If we allowed every chumpette who wish to be a jack-hole do that, this site would lose users very quickly. To make it a more pleasing experience the mods and admins do a thankless job of cleaning up the vomit of the ceiling.

As for the spin room, in the 5 or so years that I have been modding we have banned only 2 posters. Neither contributed very much of substance. I am fully in favor of letting all viewpoints stand for all to read. I rarely censor the spin room (only few times in the years I have been here). And when I did censor post, it was not for their viewpoints.
