La Tech going Indy?
The Denver Post is reporting that as soon as Thursday BYU may be back in the MWC fold.

With the MWC and C-USA working closely on scheduling a championship game, it is highly unlikely that one will raid the other. If that's the case USU may get their much hoped for invite to the MWC to get to 12 members. Then guess what? there's no more room at the Inn.

If USU were to get their dreamed-of invite, Hawai'i is surely gone and the WAC is finished as they will be down to four schools. If WW and the Belt Presidents hold a strong enough grudge, La. Tech's only option will be as an independent (or a longshot invite to the MAC). I think the chances of their indy run go up dramatically if BYU returns to the MWC (however I still hold out hope they will get a Sun Belt invite).

Ok, BYU never left the fold. They have never made any official announcement. It appears they never actually signed any documents.

With the multiple NCAA and BCS rules changes needed for any joint championship game, that is unlikely to ever happen and certainly not before the BCS current contract expires in a few years.

We (Tech) know we are in the WAC until 2012. When Fresno and Nevada leave, we are screwed. If USU goes to the MWC we are screwed. We will need something to happen between now and 2012 (Big East raids CUSA for a couple, BYU and TCU go to Big 12, etc...) or we will being staring at Independent. 2 years is alot of time though and I'm sure there is still alot that is going to happen in that time.

MWC and CUSA are not going to schedule a championship game. That's just ridiculous. The BCS isn't going to let them decide on an automatic berth and if they wwant the two best teams from their conferences to meet they can arrange that with a bowl game. Why would CUSA want their champ to lose to the MWC champ every year?

BYU staying in the WAC virtually assures that Houston will be the 12th MWC member.

As a result, CUSA will probably add someone out east, Temple, Charlotte, whoever.

The WAC will bring in Texas State and UTSA to get to 8.

The SBC, lets a golden opportunity walk right by them.

SLC Tribune picks up and elaborates upon the Denver Post's report. Looks like this one has some steam behind it.

Personally, I don't think Tech will make a move just yet.. They have 2 or 3 seasons left with at least 8 members of the WAC. They could play out these 2 seasons and wait to see how other teams fall out..
The only problem with it is, if the WAC either falls apart or adds a bunch of FCS schools and C-usa never calls, their scheduling in all their sports could fall apart.. No sunbelt team would schedule Tech in anything if they continue to thumb their nose at us, and if C-use never calls they won't have room on their schedules...

Tech is caught in a tuff position..!!

I agree that they are in a tough position, however, playing a wait and see game doesn't quite cut-it in this game of musical chairs. They may wait-and-see themsleves into oblivion.

"Thumbing their nose" assumes that a majority of the Sun Belt schools would invite them in today. I am not so sure that is the case.

I also do not believe they could get enough votes to gain re-admission to the SBC, which is good for them because they want no part of the SBC.

RE: La Tech going Indy?
MWC would be stupid to take Utah St. now. Even if BYU wants them. Everyone knows BYU wants to be in the B12 in the next 5 years and if MWC doesn't get an AQ in 2012 they'll probably go Indy. Why cave to them? Add Houston now while they will still be willing to join, when BYU leaves, take UTEP or Hawaii for 12.

Writers are just assuming Utah St. is the one because MWC inquired about them while they were getting ready to rape the WAC. They've done that, so why take USU now.

I agree with some of what you have written. If BYU stays, Houston makes much more since then Utah State. At this point BYU is in no position to make requests. They got punked by the MWC. If they don't want to go independent, then they have to sit back and take it. Houston would add a very large market to the Mountain. USU can't deliver that.

As far as how C-USA would replace Houston, I don't feel the West members would vote in favor of adding in the East when the team to be replaced is from the West. With ADs across the country looking for ways to cut travel expenses, expanding into markets within the existing conference would allow for teams to reduce travel costs for their school and its fans. This plan would benefit the conference by increasing attendance and developing natural rivalries.

I don't think the teams in the SBC will intentionally let this moment pass them by. I know North Texas isn't going to throw in the towel.

I just don't see any way that the WAC, no matter what new schools they add, will be better than the sunbelt at this point. So there's nothing really to wait for, other than perhaps those penalty fees.

C-USA would just slide Southern Mississippi over to the West. It's under 100 miles from New Orleans. I don't think the western schools would complain at all...Southern Mississippi is far better than any team the could add.

The more compelling expansion choices right now are in the east. In 3-5 years, UTSA could be a gem. But not now.

Just remember that until late in the game, not expanding was looking like a favored option in CUSA when TCU left. Memphis AD RC Johnson demonstrated that adding ANY of the schools being considered (UTEP, UNT, Tech) would result in less money per institution than sticking at 11.

It is not out of the realm of possibility that they go down that path and there has already been talk of a 9 game CUSA schedule. If that were to happen you would skip one team for two years in a 9 game slate as an 11 team league.
