I don't think we are that far behind in ability at this point. It took a long time to get rid of a crappy coach and almost as long to recover. As far as overall athletic program, we have accomplished more than Troy and anyone else outside of WKU.

I'm not arguing overall athletic program. You're probably right about that. I'm speaking only about the football program. 2006 was a good year for you, and that other season where you went 8-3, i think. when I say you've had one good year, I mean that as a reference to the two sub par years you had before that. You've had one good year since 2006. Troy's had four in a row 6 or 7 winning seasons since 2000. Abilitywise, you're close, I'll give you that. But overall program legacy - over the last ten years, no one comes close.

17 Active in the NFL (MT has 5)
4 Sunbelt Champions (MT has 1)
4 Bowl Appearances (MT has 2)
6 or 7 Winning Records since 2000 (MT has 3 or 4)
26-3 Sunbelt Record (MT's is close if you count out the four losses to Troy, but that wouldn't be fair)
4th in the country in Home Field Advantage (19-0 in home openers as well) (MT is 48th - 2nd in the sunbelt)

We have 2 conference championships, I think. Two less bowl appearances, but just as many wins. Almost the same winnng percentage in conference (so close it's not worth debating). You do have the advantage, but as I stated already, we were hobbled with a poor coach for years that left us in a hole after he left.

We've been hobbled with a city that houses less than 15,000 residents. Everyone has their setbacks. Dealing with adversity is part of being a competitor. We'll always have our small town, but we still get it done. I do expect Troy and MTSU to lead the conference into brighter days, though. MTSU has a bright future, but they're not on par with Troy as an established program for multiple years of success, yet.

RE: Poll: What week will the Muts crater & blow their season ?
How small your city is doesn't affect play on the field. Playing well on the field via a good coach is much more important. I guess my point is that we have made the correction in that area and I look for us to catch up soon and honestly I don't consider us to be extremely far behind. We do have some catching up to do though and I think we will do it even if we lose our current coach. The days of the good old boy network picking our coaches is over and so are the days of mediocrity in MT football. I think we are very competitive in conference and will be even more so most years from here on out. Of course any team can have a bad stretch, but I'm talking in general terms.

I think it can. Its a tougher sell for top recruits. A lot of kids want a big time college atmosphere in a big city. It's harder to recruit in a tiny area like Troy.

Oh sure, I agree, but given the choice of a bad coach or small city and I'll take the small city.

You consider Troy, Alabama a small city ? It ain't big enough to be classified as a small city. It's more like a small town isn't it?:odie:

I've helped out at Brantley High. They have a good football team. I know a few people from there at Troy.

Yeah, been a long time since I was over that way. They moved to Birmingham when I was a kid. Last time I went through Brantley the general store and the squirrel zoo had closed.

Didn't Brantley win the state championship?

I have no idea. It was a long time ago now. I was a kid in the 70's and spent a lot of my free time picking vegetables in the field or collecting eggs, canning etc. Grandma and Grandpa still had a wood burning stove 03-lmfao

If Tennessee had been worth staying in, maybe they wouldn't have felt compelled to go to Texas. Ol' Davy said it best...

Regarding Troy's 19 game home opener streak.

Assuming CFBDatawarehouse is correct is more like 22 and 23 unbeaten.
Division II era
1987 tied Nichols who was DI in the ill-fated Gulf Star Conference
1988 beat SEMO (also DII at the ime)
1989 beat Central Florida (DII transition to I-AA)
Division I transition era
1990 beat West Georgia (DII)
1991 beat West Georgia
I-AA era
1992 beat NW State
1993 beat Charleston Southern (low or non-scholie I-AA forced out of DIII)
1994 beat Samford (low or non-scholie I-AA forced out of DIII, game was 11/17 stadium work?)
1995 beat ETSU
1996 beat Nichols
1997 beat EKU
1998 beat Alabama State (SWAC)
1999 beat South Florida (third season of football)
2000 beat Alabama State (SWAC)
I-A transition
2001 beat Nichols
2002 beat Southern Utah
I-A/FBS
2003 beat SE LA (first year of return of program went 4-2 against non I-AA, 1-4 against I-AA beating Prarie View)
2004 Missouri
2005 Cal Poly SLO
2006 Alabama State
2007 Oklahoma State
2008 Alcorn State
2009 UAB.

By my count. Three wins over higher classification or BCS programs. Thirteen gimmes and 6-0 vs. what should have been roughly comporable opponents.

Nothing to sneeze at in my book.

Anyone else able to rattle off those 5 losses without looking them up?

Utah St in 2002, my Sr. year. UAB in 2005 (ran my mouth with co-workers before that one), MTSU in 2005, ASU in 2006 (seemed like they just kept trying to give it away), FAU in 2007 (almost the greatest comeback by a Troy team that I've witnessed).
