"Death penalty" for UL basketball for the 1973-1974 and 1974-1975 season. A penalty which was absurd for a program that did not commit the violations it was accused of.

September 15, 2007- UL loses to McNeese State 03-puke

Those are the same 2 events I thought of. The loss to McNeese a few years ago hurt (mostly pride); but does not compare in historical perspective to the death penalty. We were a dominant basketball program back then and that set us back many years.

I would go back further, to the NCAA signing day in 1980, when a scheduled press conference at West Memphis High School was cancelled. IMO, losing Keith Lee was the darkest day in ASU sports history.

That signing would have been a game changer for the ASU athletic program.

Thanksgiving was embarrassing.....losing Keith Lee and what he could have brought to our athletic programs just hurt! Our basketball program could have been vaulted to another level.

McNeese was definitely embarrassing. But, after this season, we'll be able to get a qualified D1 coach and something like that will never happen again.

Not only did the Death Penalty set the Basketball program back, but the reactions of the administration (one that unfortunately hung around for 30+ years afterward), and the subsequent way they treated athletics for said 30+ years, prevented the rest of the Athletic Department from ever consistently competing at a higher level. I think that it is safe to say that the effects of the BB Death Penalty still linger today.

Here's the story. Good read. If the NCAA pisses you off now, reading this book certainly won't change that.

My first thought was our one and only loss to FIU 52-6.

But someone on the Owls Nest remeinded me of that heartbreaking hail mary MTSU had against us.

That was a true kick in the groin.

For Denver, it would be in 1979, when DU dropped all of its sports (except for ice hockey) from NCAA D-I to NAIA status, due to financial issues. Hockey has always been D-I.

DU eventually climbed back to NCAA D-II status in the 80s and all the way back to NCAA D-I status in 1999.

You could also make an argument that dropping football in 1961 was a dark day, but ultimately, I don't think Denver would ever be the kind of school that could really excel in football at a high level.

Considering we don't have many years under our belt... not a whole lot to say as "Darkest Day"

Have to account for the FIU whopping, our team was completely new, so almost expected, just not that bad, it was a bad season in general.

I have to go with the Hail Mary as well, just too close to lose to a last ditch effort play that never works.... URG!!!!! Which would have given us a co-champioship with Troy again. (though, we still went on to win the MCB)

We owed you one, from when you guys beat us on the last play of the game, when our DB didn't knock the ball down.
