RE: The movie thread
Too my youngsters to see Coco this past weekend. I thought it was an excellent movie, best original Pixar movie since Up IMO. I am not going to deny it but I even shed a tear in the closing minutes of the movie.

Nymphomaniac Vol 1 and 2 / NF
--Saw the casting and decided to give it a watch. I was kind of shocked they were as graphic as they were with the material being covered. The main characters commentary on social norms, her own observations, and her own thoughts on society and sex/sexual relationships was very interesting. Her person she confided in with her story did a good job of offering counterpoints and trying to get her to open up more. From the beginning of Vol 1 to the end of Vol 2 I could say I was and wasn't surprised about the end ending. But, the wrap up of where and how he found her and then to come back to tell how she was in the shape she was when he found here was quite interesting and somewhat surprising it was that course of events specifically that that lead to that.

Winter Soldier is the best one. Civil War was was good....but Winter Soldier was just bad ass all the way through.

RE: The movie thread
I've been slacking on movie watching lately but finally found time to catch Den of Thieves at the theater yesterday.
I REALLY enjoyed it and think the "critics" swung and missed on their reviews.
Great action, nice twist at the end, and actually took the time to set up and tell a story.
It's not perfect, the whole sub plot with Butler's wife was useless and could (should) have been left out, but that didn't take away from the enjoying the movie.
It's kind of a nod to the old dramatic "shoot-em-up" crime stories.

RE: The movie thread
The Dark Knight trilogy / BR
--Batman Begins was a great way to reboot the franchise IMO. The Dark Knight was a great way to reboot the Joker as well as how Gotham had changed from the first movie. The 3rd, while my least favorite of the 3, really did a good job with Bane and 2's aftermath consequences.
Sin City: A Dame to Kill For / BR
--While not as kick ass as the first movie I did like the tale told in the 2nd one.
Fifty Shades Darker / BR
--Wanted to catch up before the 3rd one arrives in theaters.
Survivor / NF
--Really interesting tale about immigration checkers and political intrigue that can happen to get people from one country to another depending on who has the power and their ties to pull the strings.
Moana / NF
--Not a bad animated movie and I liked some elements of it but it felt like they tried to make the tale more "hip" with references that really didn't need to be in it.
One Punch Man S1 / NF
--I have really enjoyed its satirical take on anime.

Yep. I made the purchase. It'll be $34 when SD is available on March 6. I paid $49 and got all three.

Just tried to watch Raganark and told me 10 days. So I'm watching Incredible Hulk with Ed Norton instead

RE: The movie thread
The Legend of Drunken Master / dvd
--While the original was good for learning what the hell drunken kung fu was, this one was a better movie all the way through.
Star Trek / BR
--I really loved the first movie from the new cast when they brought back the franchise.
Sinbad: The 5th Voyage / NF
--trash. I am not sure what its deal was supposed to be but they didn't really do it right with modern pseudo old school stop motion for the bad guys.
Fifty Shades Freed / theater
--Wanted to see how the trilogy ended. I wonder if her books gave more details but the "villians" in this and the "associations" Grey had just led me to believe there was a lot more afoot in the background of his character and his family. One of the cool revelations seemed to critical but once it was said they didn't do much with its possibilities. I liked it as the finality of the trilogy but some stuff really left me hanging.
Baywatch / BR
--Honestly not a bad modern take on the old show and the cameos worked from the older cast. I think the cast worked together well and some of the barbs being tossed around were pretty funny. I think they pulled off the r rated humor much better than that Dukes of Hazard remake going R rated.

Shaft goes to Africa / dvd
--Interesting that in the 70s that human trafficking was a plot in a movie. And in one of the most pro-Black movie franchises/characters of all time they put Shaft in play to help bring down the trafficking ring.
Black Panther / theater
---not bad but won't say more till others see it.

Saw Black Panther yesterday.
Thought is was pretty good. Decent action, great effects, but nit as much pure humor as most of the other Marvel flicks.
Now to the 800# Gorilla.....
I didn't think it's "political" message was as apparent as some were making out. I thought they were definitely trying to push various viewpoints, but did a decent job of presenting many sides to a difficult argument.
Keeping that in mind, let's not forget that Wakanda ISN'T REAL. It's a fake land from a comic book, so let's not try and use it as a "symbol" of anything other than entertainment.

The only politics I got from it was the dealings with the 5 tribes of Wakanda. Also, with what happened on the prior king's watch to certain people that when the new king started finding out stuff and started seeing how certain factions were reacting to him taking over he learned there were a lot more agendas that he didn't know about.

While I agree with the bolded, someone wrote a thesis about how Black Panther emulated Haiti after they kicked the French out. Their are many who see the movie as some kind of wish fulfillment.

The comic book canon of Wakanda / Black Panther or the movie? I can't say I know enough about the French in Haiti but the movie sure didn't feel like it was a history lesson. I mean that almost seems a little Thor/ Norse Mythology in some way. Not discounting it as it could be true.... just I don't see it.

Just the movie. I’m doubtful of anyone espousing resident knowledge about the comic book

RE: The movie thread
Every time a movie comes out someone claims some type of agenda. The Force Awakens, people were hoping Finn and Poe would be a couple, I mean forget the flirting Finn did with Rey.
Finding Dory, there's claims of a lesbian couple and the sting ray is having a sex change.
Live action Beauty and the Beast there's a gay scene.
I've seen all three and thought nothing of what people are trying to push. Maybe it's because I enjoy seeing a movie and I'm more worried about being entertained than political overtones.
I plan on seeing this one. Just don't know if I'll go to the theaters or wait til I can rent it.
