Innovative MLB spring training idea?
Ok so i was thinking after the Sox got another tie today to make their preseason record look like a hockey W-L-T record, wouldnt this be a good idea?

If the game is tied after 9 do something like the NHL. Pick 3 hitters to each get one pitch to take out of the yard and treat it like an NHL shootout, and if not settled after the 3 batters, go deeper until settled.

What do you think!?

It's only an exhibition game. Wins and losses do not really matter.

In your scenario, I could see each team using bench warmers in the homerun derby/shootout that you recomend.

As a matter of fact, if a team decides that the shootout is a good way to test unproven players, they just might decide to give up a tying run on purpose.

win loss records are pointless in spring training. therefore, it doesn't matter if ties are tracked

Personally that sounds like a terrible idea.

I hate shootouts. I would hate this idea even more. Ill admit me and my friends have had this same conversation but it was more as a joke.. not serious.

It would be something for the fans just from a pure entertainment value. It could be a way to generate some earyl season excitement, marketing the stars of the game. A few of my friends go to spring training every year, and I just cannot fathom why they do not. At least this would spice things up a little. I just think it would be funny like when hockey shootouts go to the 8th and 9th shooters, to see Juan Pierre step up there. Having players airing it out during the spring swinging for the fences would pretty much cause trainers and coaches to disapprove for injury purposes.

Along the same lines, I wonder what it would be like if football had a power play. In other words, if a player commits a personal foul, instead of giving up 15 yards, the team has to play the next down with only ten players.

These games are practice. Wins and losses are irrelevant. This fact cuts against the idea in that you probably want the games resolved in as game-like a way as possible and not monkey with guy's swings unnecessarily.

It also cuts in favor of the idea because- well, it's an exhibition game, so who cares how it gets resolved, and it's not like players don't have home run contests now and then for their own entertainment.

The game should be resloved by having a player from each team spin completely around ten times while his head is resting on the bat. Then they have to race each other around the bases.

I got that idea from watching the Cougars.

How about being like the NFL? Sudden death extra innings. First team to score wins! So much for home field advantage.

Louisville Chugger instead

Wiffle ball bat, cut the top off, pour a beer in it.. Chug the beer, depending on how long it takes you to chug it thats how many spins you have to do.. Then you have to stand up and wait for the pitch to see if you can hit it.
