I'm afraid I have to point out that you're resorting to Robert's favorite tactic of using popularity to justify a position.

The popularity of any stance is utterly irrelevant to whether or not it is valid and of merit.

Furthermore,

Blah blah blah blah Treatry of Tripoli blah blah blah Benjamin Franklin blah blah blah blah blah Thomas Jefferson blah blah blah blah read some Hitchens and Dawkins blah blah blah rehashed topic.

Just because we're not a De Facto Christian nation doesn't mean we're not a De Jure Christian nation. I think the fact that others aren't forced to become Christians, when the majority of Americans are Christians, should be a testament to the tolerance of Christianity. Think it would be the same with Muslims?

Depends. Are we talking now, or during the times of the Crusades? Or during the Inquisition? Convert the heathen colonization? Christianity use to be every bit as militant as Islam is today. Onward Christian soldiers, anyone?

Another one that needs to reread history. The crusades weren't about Christians trying to conquer Muslim lands. They were lands held by Christians that were being threatened by Muslims. It was a defensive tactic by Christians. As for the inquisition, those were the dark ages. If you read the New Testament, they also went against every teaching in that text. Ever read the Qur'an? Nothing in that screed supports reform.

Zzz.

Is this one of those "infinite universe" threads? Seriously GTS, your knowledge of history is sorely lacking.

There are certainly some very big marks against the Church, particularly the Roman Catholic Church, but really, this is off target.

Can I ask you where you got your history? Private Christian school? Parents? Church? If you can read this, I would really like to know.

Many of the atrocities done in the name of the church were actually proxies for "the King", as leader of "THE Church". Hence the establishment of religion clause.

As to Onward Christian Soldiers.... Christian = Jesus. Whom exactly did Jesus EVER fight? Those of you who aren't religious like to look at "wars in the name of God" as the root of all evil, yet you miss the central message entirely. Jesus didn't say fight. Jesus said love. To paraphrase, BE ACCEPTING. He didn't say accept the sins of others, but He also didn't say go kill them. He said pray for them... show them they way... If they slap you, turn the other cheek. IMO, People who do anything OTHER than that aren't really behaving in a Christian manner. We ALL suffer from this at times, but a king claiming divinity and telling you to kill "in the name of God" is ANYTHING but a Christian.

Christian Soldiers refers to battling the evil inside us all. Marching AS to war. If you were actually GOING to war, they wouldn't say "as", as in "as if you were" going to "war".

We are a nation formed primarily by Christians. We still are. HOWEVER, not ONE mention of Jesus in the Constitution or any meaningful work. God, Creator etc. But ENTIRELY accepting of all faiths.
