RE: ABL works?
This would upset the balance of power and is a First Strike Weapon. It's existence alone could start a war.

This is useless as a first strike weapon.

Correct. Its an endo-atmospheric weapon, best employed during the Boost Phase of flight. I'd like to see it what it does to RV's on the way down.

A capability to launch your missiles and destroy any inbound missiles upsets the balance of power, nuclear parity. Maybe you have forgotten the MAD doctrine of Nuclear Deterrence. In numbers it is a First Strike Weapon. Wise up. Is the US in any position to wage another arms race?

Don't think it was designed to be one.

This program has been in R&D since the Reagan Administration.

Something like this you don't need ABM bases in Eastern Europe. You just need a runway. I hope they deploy a couple of dozen.

Do any of you really think this just happened to have a successful test the week Iran goes nuclear?

Think harder. The only thing new here is the ad campaign.

Understood. Thought the same thing myself.

More of an update

which confirms that ABL had been cancelled. I thought it to be the case, but when tests are on-going I assumed someone pulled strings and kept it around.

At any rate, this is what's in print. All the trenchcoat talk is speculation.

Could it maybe be used to down aircraft as a first strike against an unsuspecting airborne VIP target? Though that seems overkill.

Why do that with a laser when it could be done with a missile? But if it is, you're right, it's overkill.

Real good point.

It is a good point, but it begs two questions:

1. Do we spend billions on an assassination weapon for someone we haven't decided to kill yet?

2. What about the records of the plane being tracked on radar?

What makes you think there would be no missile wreckage? Real live doesn't work like Phineas and Ferb. The wreckage would be so uniquely distinctive that there would be no question who is at fault (at least not amongst the HAARP-is-not-real and alien-abduction-is-all-about-the-homosexual-fantasies crowd).

SOAF... don't disagree in principle... but it seems that Iran and Korea (among others) is still in the race. We have a huge lead, but it doesn't take many. One on Washington would certainly be a problem. I know what you're thinking, I thought the same thing... don't go there.... The alternative is to do nothing and wait until someone else does, isn't it?
