Big Ten - Texas
I hate to be that "conference change" guy, but the previous talk of some of the Eastern schools like Pitt joining the Big 10, probably meant little to nothing for NIU.

This.. would obviously change things in the Midwest a bit more.

Quote:There have been preliminary exchanges between the Big Ten and Texas,” the source told the Journal-World on Wednesday. “People will deny that, but it’s accurate.”

What happens? TCU to the Big 12 if Texas leaves? Without Texas, the Big 12 isn't nearly as impressive. I'd say this would lead to a lot of teams changing conferences in a domino effect, let's hope Compher is ready for whatever may happen.

Sure, I'm ready for a conference change. Maybe if we talk nice to them, the Sun Belt will consider us.

RE: Big Ten - Texas
This is definately the type of move the Big 10 is trying to make. They are not just going to add Missouri or Pittsburgh. They are thinking big. To make expansion work, they need someone who would bring in additional revenue. ESPN will pay a lot more for Texas than Missouri. Plus, getting the Big Ten Network a higher profile in Texas will help the revenue stream there. I've said from the beginning, they are after Texas. They've left the door open to go to 14 teams in case Texas wants other schools closer to them brought in. With the Pac 10 looking at expansion, it could be a bidding war for Texas between the Big 12, Big 10 and Pac 10. Texas considered the Pac 10 prior to the breakup of the old SWC.

Missouri or Pitt to the Big Ten doesn't really do a whole lot for me. The only way conference expansion makes sense for them is if they can land ND or Texas. This isn't really surprising to me at all and I agree with Doggone. I think all along, this is what they sought out to do.

I think that this is purely wishful thinking. The Big Ten could never give Texas what it would want. Secondly, leaving the Big 12 could possibly end some rivalries, which are a big deal in the State of Texas.

RE: Big Ten - Texas
What is it that Texas wants, that the Big 10 can not give it?

They could still play Oklahoma every year, Illinois plays Missouri, UF plays Florida State, plenty of other examples. It's not unheard of. Not to mention, they considered a move to the Pac-10 before, so your second point doesn't hold much water. With the money Texas and the Big 10 would have froom them joining, travel wouldn't be much of an issue either, they could afford to fly all their programs no problem.

I mean what other rivalary do they care about? Baylor? Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State?.. come on, they could care less about them. Tech might care, or A&M, but the fans of UTexas would be more interested in playing Michigan, OSU and Penn State.

I just don't understand why Texas would want to move to the Big Ten...What does the Big Ten offer that the Big 12 doesn't? Are the Texas fans (donors) going to want to travel to Pennsylvania, Michigan, Ohio, and Illinois in late November/December/January? Doesn't make much sense to me.

Texas, if they have interest, is purely financial and academic. The Big 12 TV contract is not near what the Big 10's is currently. Adding Texas will bolster the Big 10's even more.
This decision will be made at the Presidential level, not the AD level. Academically, the Big 10 blows away the Big 12.

The Big 10 would give Texas a lot more tv money from the Big 10 Network, Big 10 teams actually get better tx exposure overall than Big 12 teams, and the Big 10 is a much better academic conference than the Big 12 and would fit Texas better in that regard too. You could argue the Big 10 is already a better conference than the Big 12, but it's not even remotely close if Texas joins. Notre Dame is going to regret being left out in the cold someday (even with the money they get from NBC, which won't be there forever if they keep sucking) if some sort of expansion to the Big 10 occurs involving Texas, and perhaps even Pittsburgh and Missouri as well.

First and foremost for Texas to move they would not want a conference split of revenue, especially in football and in the tv contract. Big 12 teams get to keep national tv revenue, Big 10 teams do not. Secondly, Texas has always been a big proponent of keeping earned BCS cash. Do you think that Northwestern, Purdue, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa or MSU would agree to that? They could lose rivalries and Texas A&M is a big rivalry. After the Big East/ACC ugly issue the Big East especially in basketball, quit playing the teams that bolted to the ACC. I have a feeling that the remaining Big 12 teams would agree not to play Texas. Last but not least, if they really wanted to cash out, the SEC would be their best choice. Also as stated in other posts, Texas fans would have to travel quite a bit farther to see road games.

WOW - that is DUMB!!

So Michigan ONLY cares about Ohio State and doesn't care about MSU, PSU or Wisconsin or any other team in the Big 11????

Texas has VERY strong ties to Texas A&M, as well as other teams in the Big 12.

Texas has a lot of income streams that they would not want to share.

I was involved with a company doing business with Texas football and they told me that Texas has numerous areas that they don't share with the Big 12.

You goofs act like the Big 11 is better than the Big 12 - IT IS NOT. Sure it is academically but that is it.

The Big 12 has better football and basketball across the board.

Across the board?

Maybe the last couple years.. but no. The Big 10 is better than the Big 12. Especially when you take the 11 other teams in the Big 12 vs. the 11 teams in the Big 10.

Big 10 w/ Texas > Big 12 w/ Texas.

Michigan, Ohio State, Iowa, Penn State, Wisconsin vs. Oklahoma & Nebraska, Kansas basketball and then just bunch of crap.

I hate watching the Big 10 in anything, and would much rather root for a Big 12 team, but come on. This is ridiculous. Without Texas, the Big 12 is just another Big East. Should probably add Oklahoma and kick Northwestern out to go to the Big East though, if you do add Texas.

And yes.. Michigan fans only truly care about their rivalary vs. Ohio State. Would they like to win the other games.. sure, is it like the Ohio State game, no.
