Nuclear Tipping Point Premiere Held at Universal Studios,
Co-hosted by Governor Schwarzenegger;
Documentary Tackles Nuclear Dangers,
Features Shultz, Perry, Kissinger, and Nunn

Dear Larry:

Last week, Nuclear Tipping Point premiered at Universal Studios, Hollywood, co- hosted by California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
The documentary film focuses on conversations with former Secretaries of State George Shultz and Henry Kissinger, former Secretary of Defense William Perry, and me on reducing nuclear dangers.

In Nuclear Tipping Point, we share the personal experiences that led us to write three Wall Street Journal opinion-editorials describing our efforts to reduce reliance on nuclear weapons, to prevent their spread into potentially dangerous hands and ultimately to end them as a threat to the world.

The film is introduced by General Colin Powell, narrated by actor Michael Douglas and includes interviews with Governor Schwarzenegger and former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev. Secretaries Shultz, Perry and I participated in a panel discussion moderated by author and journalist Philip Taubman, following the film screening.

Nuclear Tipping Point was written and directed by Ben Goddard and was produced by the Nuclear Security Project to raise awareness about nuclear threats and to help build support for the urgent actions needed to reduce nuclear dangers. The Project is coordinated by the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI), in cooperation with Stanford University's Hoover Institution.

Please visit http://www.nucleartippingpoint.org to order a free DVD, see the trailer and additional information on steps that you can take now to reduce nuclear dangers.

Sincerely,

Sam Nunn
NTI Co-Chairman and CEO

I don't think that anyone disputes that nuclear weapons are dangerous, but a goal of "ending them as a threat to the world" is kid talk.

Someone doesn't understand human nature. The world has "banned" landmines, chemical weapons, torture, etc, but who believes that there aren't huge stockpiles of material and knowledge on all three?

We'd be better off saying something like "The world has X number of nuclear weapons. Here is the list of what we have, and here is a % available for viewing at any one time. The rest of secreted away in deterrence roles, sorry."

Well, the rest of the goals might be achievable to some extent. But yeah, ending them as a threat is not happening. Unless they had to be delivered via missile and we had a missile defense system that worked.

You left out the attribution for that quote. Which one of George Shultz, Henry Kissinger, Adm. William Perry, Gen. Colin Powell, Mikhail Gorbachav, or Sam Nunn were you quoting?

It's as if your response had something to do with the NTI project, but not quite...

I don't know actually, I took that quote from the post but it sure seems like Sam Nunn wrote it.........

ok, I completely missed that as part of the statement.

The bulk of the message is reducing the threat. But, my point is that the folks behind this are hardly lightweights - you've got four people who by my count spent 34+ years in the white house as what are arguably among the 10 most powerful people in the US government, plus a man who spent several years as leader of one of the very few rivals to US power in its history. I think its a distortion to view the entire initiative in light of one poorly chosen sentence fragment.

Fair enough, but if they are so smarty than they should understand the importance of writing sensible prose. If I ridicule the environmentalist who say the glaciers will disappear in 25 years, then I can ridicule those that I even agree with for using lazy, feel good hyperbole.

Re-reading the post maybe they meant "ending them as a threat to the world" as "only responsible parties shall hold the key to nuclear weapons?"

I am not as impressed by the nomenklatura as I once was.

I agree absolutely. What can I say - he's a former senator. Of course after my attempt at being clever blew up in my face and made me look like an idiot, I should probably shut up myself.

The image of Sam Nunn in a bikini as a beauty contest contestant isn't a pretty one. That sentence fragment just doesn't belong, but I think it was Obama who talked about "ending the threat of nuclear weapons" so maybe it's a carry-over from the political process. And, yes, I both made up that phrase and attributed it to Obama without any real basis to do so except my own faulty memory.

At any rate, I ordered the (free) dvd and plan to watch it - maybe while donating blood where I can't - or shouldn't - fall asleep.
