Benny Moss is out as UNC-Wilmington men's basketball coach. With his fourth season at UNCW slipping away, Moss was reassigned to another position in the athletic department on Thursday, according to a source close to the program.

After this season, he has three years remaining on a contract that pays him $170,000 annually.

Moss had a 41-74 overall record, the worst of any coach in school history. The Seahawks were 14-39 overall and 6-22 in the Colonial Athletic Association the last two seasons.

UNCW suffered the second-worst loss in CAA history on Wednesday night at Hofstra, which broke a five-game losing streak with the 39-point victory. The Seahawks have lost six of seven and under Moss suffered the eight worst CAA losses in school history.

The Seahawks, who finished 12th in the conference last season, were 7-14 overall and 3-7 in the CAA heading into Saturday night's homecoming game against Towson.

Moss, a former Charlotte assistant, was hired in April 2006 to replace successful coach Brad Brownell.

The Seahawks struggled to a 7-22 mark, the worst in school history in the 2006-07 season, but bounced back the following year to go 20-13. He received a two-year contract extension from UNCW AD Kelly Mehrtens after that season. Mehrtens, who did not return phone messages on Thursday, met with Moss in her office on Thursday after the team returned from New York.

UNCW booster George Rountree, a local attorney, declined comment when contacted at home on Thursday night.

"Obviously the team has not done well, I'm sorry that the situation is what it is and hopefully there will be something positive that can happen the rest of the year,” Rountree said. “The other night was a bad night. There have been a lot of bad nights.”

The status of assistants Henry Dickerson, Brooks Lee is unknown. There is no word on who will coach the team on Saturday night.
