RE: Friars 81 - UConn 66
I don't disagree. My only quibble would be that Villanova should be included in the '80s group.

While a slight case could be made for the Wildcats to join the other three, I think most would see them just a notch below. They played 9 out of the 10 years and only finished in the Top 3 of the conference 3 of those 9 years for a third of the time. And they had zero BET championships that decade.
The other three finished in the Top 3 of the conference at least half the time and won at least 2 BET championships.
Cheers,
Neil

Well, they did win a national title. That carries a ton of weight. When people think of the Big East in the '80s Villanova's NC win is one of the first things they think of.

I'd say when people think of March Madness they think of Nova's win over Georgetown. It was a huge upset. I don't believe they necessarily think Nova was on the same level of play for a decade with the likes of Georgetown, Syracuse, and St. John's in the Big East, which is an entirely different point.
I also bet they can't easily recall the name of one player from Nova including that NC game. But they know Patrick Ewing, Chris Mullin, Pearl Washington, Derrick Coleman, etc.
Cheers,
Neil
PS - the latter point wasn't meant to disparage the talent of Nova from that time frame. Ed Pinckney was a great college player as was John Pinone from the early parts of the 80s.

Syracuse hasn't had losing season since the 60s...and only one team less than 19 wins since 1970-71. They led the league in attendance.
They have come closest to being the Flagship since the conference formed in 1979
Not UConn, not Georgetown
But the conference has never had a flagship in basketball. During the '80s Georgetown, Syracuse, St. Johns & Villanova were all marquee teams. Providence & Seton Hall were at times as well.
80's - G'Town, SU, St. John's
90's - UConn, SU, G'Town
00's - Pitt, UConn, SU
Kinda what I tried to say, G-Town in the 80s, UConn 90s and now; Syracuse always in the mix. The 3 prong thing makes sense. As for BB nothing tops it today. FB although I love it is a different story.
