It's probably for the best

=================================================

Among other features of the slickness of this budget move, with the 60 vote senate majority now gone, and the rest of congress going into campaign mode and the likelihood of the Republicans returning to a position of power in one or both houses, this is a pretty safe move for Obama. His strategy when he came into office was to bull through as much of his agenda as he could as fast as he could before anyone could be held accountable. This is a signal that he's done - whether by his choice or not.

Obama’s Spending Freeze: Is It Real or Is He Copying Bush?

Quote:Many critics will correctly note that this is like going on a drunken binge in Vegas and then temporarily joining Alcoholics Anonymous.

But don’t get too excited yet. It is not clear whether the White House is proposing a genuine spending freeze, meaning “budget outlays” for these programs stay at $447 billion for three years, or a make-believe freeze that applies only to “budget authority.” This is an enormously important distinction. Budget outlays matter because they represent the actual burden of government spending. Budget authority, by contrast, is a bookkeeping measure that — at best — signals future intentions. During the profligate Bush years, for instance, apologists for the Administration tried to appease fiscal conservatives by asserting that budget authority was growing at ever-slower rates. In some cases, they were technically correct, but their arguments were deceptive because real-world spending kept climbing to record levels. And needless to say (but I’ll say it anyhow), future intentions never became reality.

Eerily similar to TR. But since TR's face is on Rushmore, I'd call him the ultimate RINO.

Quote:Spending and deficits grew under Reagan, but he had mostly democrat-controlled congresses, and he was on a mission to end the cold war. Shrub had neither of those problems, and let the lid blow off spending.

Well he did have that whole terrorism thing. I think you could argue that 1B jihadists is every bit the threat that the USSR was.

Quote:Shrub made people hate conservatives without actually being one.
True
Quote: He made Obama possible.

Not so true. The media hated Bush before Nov 2000. BDS was widely diagnosed before Nov 2000.

The media were relentless in their criticism of Bush. A significant portion of it was illegitimate. Then they turned around and paved the way for Obama.

No, I don't think you can pin this completely on Bush.

I think I agree with Owl. With just about anybody except Bush, Obama would've had a much harder time becoming Prez.

There's an awful lot of people who are pleased as punch that they can always pull out the "I voted for Obama" as "proof" they're not a racist. The good news is that's out of the way and they wont have the same need the next time an unqualified moron manages to get on the ticket. However, they still want to prove they aren't sexist, so an idiot woman still has a good shot at The White House.

Hold on!!! Won't a spending freeze limit job creation and maybe even cause layoffs?!? I thought Barry O. was all about jobs, just not federal gubment jobs. Funny thing the stimulus money given to some local gubments is running out so the next fiscal budget for these gubments will require job cuts. So once again how is stimulus creating jobs>

It'll freeze public sector hiring. But the problems we have today are caused in part by our growing public employment sector; in other words, to fix the real problems plaguing this country, we need to stop the government creep sooner, instead of later.

True, but TR was publicly accused of being an atheist for the way that he did it. What ever happened to Bush the elder's "Big Tent"?

Started thinking back to Lincoln and TR...both reactionary interventionists, who stomped all over the Constitution. Maybe true conservatives are the real RINOs.

Washington, Adams, Jefferson....they were all accused of being "Monarchist"(18th/19th century term for "Statist") at one time or another for things they did as Chief Executive, by their opponents plus the general nature of people freaking out anytime anything is done. Whether good or bad.
