That's to be expected for this bowl. Jones was bent on taking that first SMU bowl team back to Hawai'i. Even if they had won C-USA West (they had sole position with two weeks to go, IIRC), he preferred to take the team to Hawai'i instead of the Liberty Bowl

The economic situation has a more limited effect on mainland bowls. But, when you're talking about flying to a place that's also very expensive to stay, it's a serious effect.

I mean, who in Reno wouldn't want to go to Hawaii this time of year?

As for June, he's cocky as hell, but he's really got it going on as a HC. Pretty soon, people will be talking about SMU as an expansion candidate if SMU keeps improving at this pace

I may not see SMU as a Big East expansion candidate but definately a MWC expansion candidate.

June Jones is one hell of a college coach.

Jones wanted to play in the Hawaii Bowl for one reason and one reason only:

RECRUITING.

Jones, former Hawaii Coach that lead them to a BCS Bowl (and hence Hawaii has fallen apart after he left), wanted to get virtually a WEEK worth of publicity during their 6-7 day stay in Hawaii...and it worked.

6 Pac-10 teams signed players out of Hawaii last season...along with the likes of Utah, BYU (large Mormon influence in the Islands), WVU and other schools.

Jones wants some of those kids to sign with SMU in the future.

I'm going a good bit of Pitt's game. WVU and Seton Hall play at the same time, which is stupid. It diminishes both audiences somewhat...
