Refs admit UCONN hold calls were wrong

Just glad they did not screw UCONN out of a victory. UCONN OL totally dominated ND's DL in the 2nd half like they have done to so many teams.

Quote:Big East Official: UConn Calls Were Wrong

By JUSTIN VERRIER

November 23, 2009

When UConn coach Randy Edsall touched down in Connecticut on Saturday night, he began sifting through the slew of texts and e-mails he had received after UConn's 33-30 double-overtime victory over Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind.

One stuck out from all the rest. It was from Terry McAulay, the Big East coordinator of football officials.

"He got me [first] because he probably knew I was going to be giving him a call [Sunday]," Edsall said.

The Huskies were flagged for two offensive holding penalties in the final two minutes of regulation. One could have given UConn a first down at the Irish 1-yard line, while the other would have resulted in an Andre Dixon touchdown with 1:31 to play.

The latter forced the Huskies into a second-and-13 from the 15 and ultimately ended with a Dave Teggart 29-yard field goal to tie the score at 20 with 1:10 left in regulation.

"[McAulay] said that neither offensive holding call was a foul," Edsall said.

Each week, Big East teams have the right to submit potentially questionable calls to McAulay, who reviews them and provides feedback. The officials in question were from the Big East.

Edsall said he watched the game tape on the flight back and again at home, and the right calls were clear to him.

"After watching the TV copy, it only further confirmed what I had thought and the information that Terry had relayed back to me," he said.

Edsall wouldn't say how often McAulay admits error, instead noting that he sympathized with the human element involved in officiating.

"Whatever calls are made, that's what we live by," Edsall said. "We have a chance to have 'em looked at, have 'em reviewed. Does it do anything after the fact? No. But we have a system in place and that's how we go about it."

RE: Refs admit UCONN hold calls were wrong
I wonder how many NFL officials, like McAulay, work for NCAA conferences in a supervisory role. I believe the Big 12 uses an NFL ref, or possibly a retired NFL ref. Especially since NFL officials are considered part-time and must hold down a full time job to be able to ref.
