BEAR, Del. – A Delaware first-grader who was facing 45 days in an alternative school as punishment for taking his favorite camping utensil to school can return to class after the school board made a hasty change granting him a reprieve.

The seven-member Christina School Board voted unanimously Tuesday to reduce the punishment for kindergartners and first-graders who take weapons to school or commit violent offenses to a suspension ranging from three to five days.

Chalk up a minor victory.

That brings the score to PC America 1,000,000, Common Sense 1.

Then vote their ass out of office or apply public pressure. I don't see them "coercing" you to vote for them. Sometimes small town politics really is as simple as basic principles, despite how bastardized Washington politics may have become. School boards are not run by the Corleones. And apparently in this case (from the article link), the public outcry was loud enough that the board changed the legislation.

I said coercing when they take my taxes. Please don't put words in my mouth to set up straw man arguments.

The one and only reason we don't have competition among schools (even in the form of vouchers) is b/c professional educators couldn't use coercion to get their funding.

Fine then, you still vote for those who levy your taxes.

P.S. There will always be taxes.

I kept several knives , screw drivers , wrenches, etc in my first car ( had in HS) ,
none would be as good a weapon as the tire iron or the car itself.

Sorry to hear that the failed liberal school system that eats up 50% of the state's budget is responsible for the stress that you, your wife and child is going through. Remind me again, how is a nail clipper a threat to anyone? more than a knife or fork in the cafeteria.

For those keeping score, I left the meeting several hours ago and my kid was not expelled but he's not allowed back to school either. He'll be home schooled until we can find another school for him because the principal refuses to let him back and we have refused to send him back. Oh, and he needs a complete psych evaluation which the near bankrupt school system is going to spend $5 to 7k on.

We used to drive to high school with our rifles in our windows, yes Robert, just like them 'ole redneck boys, during deer season. I'd get up at 4:30AM, drive across the Byram Swinging Bridge and turn right. Would hunt until about 7AM. If I killed a deer, it would be a skip day. ...not that it happened regularly. 2 times is about all I can muster. After school, back across the Pearl River for the evening hunt.

My son has ADHD and the principal pretty much controls that school like a concentration camp Nazi, everybody has to do things her way or they get in trouble. I had it out with her pretty good a year or so ago and really gave her a curse filled piece of my mind. My son is impulsive and she can't stand it (it drives me crazy too) and she determined a long time ago he had to go. The guns and soldiers gave her the ammo to say he was violent and today she got the school psychololist to agree. However, a psycologist for the school district totally disagreed and our advocate chewed them up and spit them out. This battle has been going on for two and a half years and that ***** finally won, we refuse to send him back there. As it turns out, she violated laws were were unaware of and we'll be filing complaints with the state and school board. Her immediate boss didn't try to talk us out of it even though it will make her look bad. This principal seems to have a long history of abusing her authority and her boss finally had enough and now she's letting things follow their natural course, something our advocate says would not have happened a few years ago.

As for the pictures of guns, well this is California and I'm finding out that everyone is afraid of another Columbine. Columbine and OJ Simpson really ruined it for a lot of people.

We all carried knives to school every day. I don't remember a single stabbing. A lot of guys had their rifles and pistols in their car. We never had a single shooting.

We also all had fists. Now, I do remember a few guys using their fists to hurt each other. Maybe we should cut off the kids hands just to be sure.

We fought with fists in school. Shooting someone was unheard of. Maybe the libs need to start looking at the environment they created. It seeped into the South slowly, probably why I was taking a rifle to school in my vehicle in 1988.

Sucks, really, really sucks. There has got to be something you can sue them for. Equal Protection? Maybe you can scare a settlement out of them. What would happen if it were a picture of people f'ing. They probably let it slide as long as they were same sex.

My mom, an elementary school Assistant Principle, has always kind of lobbied against zero tolerance. People have common sense and know what is and what isn't a problem. But when you are given rules, you must do what they say. Evaluation is for the appeals program.

ADHD (attention defecit & hyperactive disorder) is recognized by the state as a disability. I never really heard of it until I met my wife and her kid. Putting aside all the symptoms, and there are many, his diagnosis also includes the ring of fire. An image of his brain, looking for the top down, shows a red ring which is all his neurons firing at once. That makes him hyper, impulsive (which gets him in trouble) and can cause him to have an extreme focus on something or be easily distracted - it all depends on his interest. After learning about the ailment and talking to a ton of Ph.D's I see a little ADHD in a lot of people. And yes, put him infront of a video game and he does very well, there is no deficiency. You doubters probably see it in people and not recognize it it, but if you know someone with a truly bad case you would tend to believe in it.

Mach, you out there? What do you do with ADHD kids in your school?

My wife and I talked about suing the district. I asked her what the damages were and I'm sure it would cost us a lot more than we'd take in. If anything, the only thing we can sue for is a procedural change and right now we just can't afford to take on a fight that will help the people following in our footsteps and not us.

Our advocate has 9 other clients who have problems with this school and she's going to try to get them to go with us to the school board and ***** up a storm.

When you don't spank kids, and you don't let them fight and wrestle, then they don't learn about pain and its infliction.

We didn't shoot or stab each other because most of us had already killed a squirrel, a quail, or a deer. We'd seen something die at our hands. We knew what it meant. We'd teared up with the support of our Dad or our buds and got over it. But the lesson was learned. That's why we didn't shoot and stab each other.

I believe it exists. However, when you see it, you know it. It's far different than a rowdy kid or a bored kid.
