Drummer thanks burn center staff

Thursday, October 08, 2009

Rock drummer Travis Barker returned to Augusta and the burn center that saved his life Wednesday to show those who treated him his appreciation -- part of which came in the form of a donation.

"I'm here to say 'thank you' to everyone who took care of me after the accident," he said in a news release from Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Doctors Hospital. "I was sort of unconscious the last time I was here, and I felt like I owed them a big 'thank you.' "

The Blink-182 drummer and disc jockey Adam Goldstein, better known as DJ AM, were the only survivors of a fiery crash Sept. 19, 2008, at Columbia Metropolitan Airport. Four people died -- Mr. Barker's assistant, his bodyguard and two crew members.

During his visit, Mr. Barker confirmed he and Blink-182 plan to donate $100,000 to the burn centers that helped save his life last year, including the Still Burn Center. He said the donation came from Blink-182's Sept. 19, 2009, show in Tempe, Ariz.

"I saw what it took to help people who have been burned," Mr. Barker said. "I ended up playing on the anniversary of the crash and I wanted to make sure the proceeds from that show went to help the burn centers."

This is cool as hell. The Joseph M. Still (father of Susan) Burn Center is the largest in the nation. Cool because it's local and they saved one helluva drummer of a band I love.

Hey Robert, wanna talk about my hick town again? Or the South in general? Here's a little information on the Joseph M. Still (Father of Susan, the astronaut) Burn Center:

Quote:Joseph M. Still Burn Center is a large medical burn facility located in Augusta, Georgia (United States). It is part of the Doctors Hospital campus, and serves as a primary burn care center for the Southeastern United States. The 59-bed unit sees admission of more than 2,000 patients annually, mostly from the southeast. Dr. Joseph M. Still, Jr., founded the center in 1978, beginning with one bed in the intensive care unit of Doctors Hospital, eventually expanding to the present state-of-the-art facility, which is currently the largest burn center in the country, and third largest in the world.
