How much college experience did Pete Carroll have before taking over at USC?

RE: Gruden to UL growing legs
The only two things about the situation that arise my curiosity are:

1. I've seen his salary with the Bucs as listed from somewhere between $4 million and $5 million a year. That's a lot of money for his services. Even if UL comes up with an offer of 2.5 million as I think others have suggested, that's still fairly low compared to what he was getting just a year ago and what he could command at the NFL level.

2. It's a well known fact that his playbook is the size of a dictionary. It's pretty much one of the most advanced even in the NFL. It would never work in college where I think more teaching is done on the fundamentals than X's and O's. But he's definitely a smart guy so I would assume he'd know that.

He is a hard working guy and loves football so it would be interesting to see how he'd turn out. It'd be neat for USF to get a chance to beat him.

Pete Carroll
College player -- 1969 - '72
College coaching -- 1978 - '83
NFL coaching -- 1984 - '99
College HC - 2001 - present

Jon Gruden
College player -- 1981 - '84
College coaching -- 1986 - '89
NFL coaching -- 1990 - '08

Neither had been head coaches in college. And if Gruden gets a coaching job then he and Carroll would have sat out a year of coaching before taking their college jobs.

Taking over at USC is a wee bit different than taking over at Louisville.

I have a hard time believing that John Gruden would've turned down Tennessee this year only to take the Louisville job this year for less money.

Plus, USC Football Head Coach pay scale is actually very close to what many NFL HC's receive...and probably a lot more than what UL will spend on a Football HC.

Gruden could get $5 Million plus per year in the NFL next year...and while I think he would be a good choice for UL...the $$$$ that many NFL teams are willing to throw out there...that's tough to beat...unless you are one of the top/richest college football programs in the land (i.e. UF, USC, Oklahoma, Michigan, etc...).

You could say the same about Jim Tressel of Ohio State. He came straight from high school. I know many OSU fans wish he'd stayed there, due to their BCS futility. But he's been fairly successful - without any college experience prior to his arrival in Columbus...

Umm...Tressel was head coach at Youngstown St. when they won four I-AA national titles.

He didn't come from HS. He came from Youngstown State, D1-AA. He had won a bunch of national titles at that level as well.

The above reasons are exactly why I say it's wishful thinking on some UofL fans part thinking Gruden would accept a position with the Cards. (Not mine because I don't believe he is the best choice for our program.) I respect the fact the man is a workaholic but aside from that I believe he's ill prepared to coach college football.

Gruden was still Tampa coach and didn't have a clue yet about being fired. They were after him during the middle of the season, by hte time Gruden was fired Kiffin was named coach already.

Wouldn't worry about it. Some college coaches came from the high school ranks, like Todd Dodge at North Texas.

There's also the epic fail that Gerry Faust had at Notre Dame, coming directly from Cincy-Moeller HS.

The only goats in this will be the Louisville fans that think Gruden is coming to Louisville.
