RE: Blame it on Rio
Disappointed White House Struggles to Explain Chicago's Defeat

By Anne E. Kornblut
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, October 2, 2009; 12:53 PM

With the stunning news that Olympic officials had swiftly rejected Chicago as host the 2016 Olympics, despite a personal, last-minute appeal from President Obama, the White House was left Friday with the immediate and difficult challenge of explaining what happened.

Did the president falter by making remarks that were emotional and personal, rather than giving specifics about his adopted home town? Is the defeat a sign that Obama's global popularity has begun to wane?

White House advisers -- many of them Chicago natives, with a personal stake in the bid -- rushed into the back recesses of the West Wing to digest the outcome, and then emerged, looking glum, to comment.

"Obviously, it was disappointing," senior adviser David Axelrod said on CNN from the North Lawn of the White House. "We wanted Chicago to get this. We wanted the U.S. to host the Olympics. The president made a very strong appeal, and it didn't work out, but it was well worth the effort."

Axelrod blamed the internal machinations of the International Olympic Committee for the rejection. He argued that the bid by Madrid was led by a former president of the IOC, who was calling in years' worth of favors, and that Rio de Janeiro, trying to become the first South American host, had a strong case as well.

The IOC ended up choosing Rio to host the 2016 Summer Games.

"I don't view this as a repudiation of the president or the first lady," he said. "I think there are politics everywhere, and there were politics inside that room."

Obama was still in the air, flying back from making his pitch in Copenhagen, when the news broke shortly before noon.

The president had traveled halfway around the world to make the case for Chicago, joining his wife, first lady Michelle Obama, his senior adviser Valerie Jarrett and an array of Chicago luminaries, including Oprah Winfrey. His top aides had refused to speculate ahead of time about what a defeat would mean, but privately acknowledged that Obama was taking a risk by making such a personal effort.

Even with the debate over health care, unexpectedly high unemployment numbers, nuclear talks with Iran and the deliberations over an Afghan strategy still underway, Obama's decision to involve himself in the Olympic vote seemed to guarantee that the news from Copenhagen would eclipse other stories for at least a day.
Asked earlier Friday whether Obama would talk about the decision aboard Air Force One, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs quipped: "Depends on what that decision is."

Obama is now scheduled to arrive at the White House at 4 p.m. and to make remarks then.

The racism accusations will be hard to make stick because Brasil is the most color-blind society I have ever experienced. That's one of the main reasons why Brasil is high on my list of destinations if things here degenerate to the point that I feel compelled to leave. I'd put that eventuality at about 50-50 for now. The next six months will tell me a lot.

Of course, the olympics going to Brasil will knock that down a notch or two as far as my evaluation of potential home countries.

Seriously,

With S America having never hosted an Olympics, and Rio being a prime tourist spot...who didn't see this coming?

That's why Obama is a fool. He fully vested himself in a losing cause, believing is charisma could sway the decision.

Hint: Dude, they like you BECAUSE you're stupid!

When you spend 8 months telling the world that we are to blame for all its problems, and then show up trying to sell the idea that we are deserving of this reward, you think maybe you have a bit of a credibility problem? Maybe?

Here's hoping that Obama has as much success with Obamacare and cap-and-tax and card check as he had with the Olympics.

Yeah, right.

Funny thing, one of the other professors here (Chicago native) tried to push that same argument a few minutes ago.

The third world is pretty heavily represented on the IOC and I'm guessing they went firmly for Rio. I'm guessing Samaranch's plea for Madrid took some European votes that Chicago might have been counting on. Will be interesting to see more analysis of the results.

Either way, it seems like a significant defeat for the Charismatic One. I just don't know how to spin it otherwise. Remember the discussions yesterday about how he wouldn't be going unless it was in the bag for Chicago, that he would risk too much political capital otherwise?

As one who believes that the more Obama succeeds in passing his left-of-socialist agenda, the worse off the USA is, and vice versa, I hope those predictions prove accurate.

Here is one White House Job that can be eliminated.

THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Press Secretary
_____________________________________________________________
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 16, 2009

President Obama Announces New White House Office of Olympic, Paralympic and Youth Sport

WASHINGTON – Today, President Barack Obama announced the formation of the White House Office of Olympic, Paralympic and Youth Sport.

This permanent White House office will promote the values of the Olympic Movement and encourage increased youth participation in athletics. The primary function of the Office will be to enhance awareness of the Olympic Movement through promotion of its fundamental principles at the federal level.

President Obama said, "It is an important goal of my administration to give our nation’s children every possible tool they need to grow, learn and succeed in life. A key part of this is increasing access to healthy, constructive activities like sports for our nation’s children. Too many American kids – particularly those in urban areas – have no access to organized sporting activities. Sports are an important way to instill values, judgment and teamwork in our nation’s kids, and this new office reflects our commitment to giving all our children a chance to thrive. As the International Olympic Committee moves forward with their selection process we hope that this new office can serve as a model for youth involvement worldwide."

The White House Office of Olympic, Paralympic and Youth Sport will:

•Recommend federal policies and programs to the President to enhance opportunities and access for youth participation in sport, with particular focus on youth in urban areas

•Foster and encourage youth sporting, educational and cultural events involving Olympic values-based programs and the participation of U.S. Olympians and Paralympians

The Office will also work in coordination with appropriate executive departments and agencies, including the Departments of Education and Health and Human Services, to:

•Engage in outreach to state and local government officials, nonprofit organizations and the private sector

•Coordinate federal resources, and act as liaison to, any organizing committee for an Olympic and Paralympic Games hosted in the United States

•And work closely with the United States Olympic Committee and national sport governing bodies to increase access and opportunities for youth to participate in sports.

So, where would you rather be during a warm summer day? The shores of Lake Michigan, or the Beaches in Rio?

**I guess this would be a late or early summer games since Rio is in the Southern Hemisphere (like Australia).

In honesty...I could care less about the Olympics or who get to waste a bunch of stolen money to host the event. Look at what happened in China..all that money pissed away so they could put on a show for the world....Now the venues sit vacant and unused.03-puke

I gotta ask, would Chicago had won or scored better if the Big O, Mrs Big O, and that other O had not been so arrogant or made sacrifices when they lobbied for it?

They wouldn't have finished worse than fourth.
