A healthcare alternative
Why doesn't either side just write a bill that offers government subsidized healthcare to only those who want it. In this the benefits wouldn't come from some mass taxpayer fund, but out of the checks of those who choose to be a part of said program. This program would also have free entry and exit and would also have a clause that it wouldn't go beyond its original scope. This offers a real alternative that people who have pre-existing conditions or other reasons that they can't receive private insurance. Illegals would also be unable to reap the benefits because they would actually have to register.
Could be as little as a 4 page bill.

Because the only people who want it are people who A) don't work, B) are laid off, C) are on the dole, D) think they're invincible, or E) have pre-existing conditions. Most of the people you are talking about couldn't sustain a group-based policy. It would have to be government-subsidized. Then again, it would be a helluva lot cheaper than forcing us ALL into that BS.
This is what Democrats like Robert want:
What do we want? SINGLE PAYER. When do we want it? NOW. Who's going to pay for it? THE RICH.

I have to go with Reb on this one. The people who sign up for this will be the ones who can't afford to sustain it.
