Recycling is good

With the news of William Cole transferring from Oklahoma State to North Texas, I think we can officially declare UNT the recycling center of college sports.

Johnny Jones (who joins John Hedlund as the gold standard for UNT coaches) took on Keith Wooden and Kendrick Davis as transfers and ended up in the NCAA Tournament a couple of years back. Since then he has added George Odufuwa from Arizona State and Cameron Spencer, who walked on after he left SMU.

The formula is one UNT coaches are following across the board now.

In football, Todd Dodge has taken on Tyler Stradford from Oklahoma and Julian Herron from SMU in addition to Cole.

Women's basketball coach Shanice Stephens will have Brittney Hudson (Rice) and Niqky Hughes (Texas) at her disposal this season after they sat out last year.

Hedlund added Nikki Crocco from Arkansas this season (UNT is off to a 2-0 start, by the way).

For a school like UNT, having coaches welcome in the disgruntled or the best of the castoffs from the Big 12 and SEC only makes sense.

Let's be honest here. Most of the William Coles of the world are not coming to UNT out of high school to play in the Sun Belt, not when he can go to Oklahoma State or Texas. That's just the reality of life.

What UNT can be is Second-Chance U.

There might not be a school in a better position to be that school.

UNT is a public school located right in the middle of one of the biggest talent hotbeds in the country. Players in all sports are going to sign with out-of-state schools or ones from the big-time conferences every year. And not all of them are going to be happy with where they end up.

Some will want to come home. Others will want more playing time. Cole suffered a knee injury that prompted him to transfer.

From what has transpired the last few months, it appears as if the UNT football program is embracing the philosophy that has made Jones successful.

That's good news for UNT.
