Mooney was very good indeed.
For size comparisons, he was listed at 5-10, 247. Our two deep at fullback this week are 5-11, 203, and 5-10, 221.
Speed comparisons I can only give anecdotally:
* Both of the two deep (CeDarius Williams and Kingsley Ehie) were slotbacks last year. Williams continued to take some snaps at slotback during spring practice, but I think he's been only at fullback since preseason practice began.
* Both carry substantially less weight than any of our fullbacks last year.
* Since the new staff came on board, the strength program has had much more emphasis on speed -- not at the expense of strength, but as a compliment.
So, they should be faster. And, since they won't carry the ball 40+% of the time like Mooney did, their size relative to him should keep them from getting worn down too much.
FWIW, "downsizing" in favor of quickness is a fundamental theme of new head coach Rich Ellerson's offense AND defense. Mooney's primary backup last year was Bryson Carl, who is now a senior, still on the team, and listed at 6-0, 245. No other fullback on the roster is above 230.
It's not just the backfield that has intentionally gotten smaller. Our #2 LT is 6-5, 240. That's not a typo. The heaviest on our two-deep OL weighs 283. The three-deep OL for last year's Army-Navy Game had 3 non-seniors over 290. The heaviest player on our current two-deep DL weighs 275.
The one place where we have gotten bigger is at WR. Former starting OL Ali Villanueva is starting at WR. He's listed at 6-10, 283. That's not a typo either, but his roster weight hasn't changed since spring ball and observers agree that he has lost some weight. (He was listed as 6-10, 302 as the starting LT last season.)
