The missile does have enough range to hit around Midway however, which is US territory. NK launced a missile over 4th of July weekend a couple of years ago. I think we need to park a couple of ABM/AEGIS equipped ships off of Midway and intercept whatever comes down.

Report: NKorea may fire missile toward Hawaii

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) - North Korea may launch a long-range ballistic missile toward Hawaii in early July, a Japanese news report said Thursday, as Russia and China urged the regime to return to international disarmament talks on its rogue nuclear program.

The missile, believed to be a long-range Taepodong-2, would be launched from North Korea's Dongchang-ni site on the northwestern coast, said the Yomiuri daily, Japan's top-selling newspaper. It cited an analysis by the Japanese Defense Ministry and intelligence gathered by U.S. reconnaissance satellites.

The missile launch could come between July 4 and 8, the paper said.

While the newspaper speculated the Taepodong-2 could fly over Japan and toward Hawaii, it said the missile would not be able to hit Hawaii's main islands, which are about 4,500 miles (7,200 kilometers) from the Korean peninsula.

A spokesman for the Japanese Defense Ministry declined to comment on the report. South Korea's Defense Ministry and the National Intelligence Service—the country's main spy agency—said they could not confirm it.

Tension on the divided Korean peninsula has spiked since the North conducted its second nuclear test on May 25 in defiance of repeated international warnings. The regime declared Saturday it would bolster its nuclear programs and threatened war in protest of U.N. sanctions taken for the nuclear test.

U.S. officials have said the North has been preparing to fire a long-range missile capable of striking the western U.S. In Washington on Tuesday, Gen. James Cartwright, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said it would take at least three to five years for North Korea to pose a real threat to the U.S. west coast.

President Barack Obama and South Korean President Lee Myung-bak met in Washington on Tuesday for a landmark summit in which they agreed to build a regional and global "strategic alliance" to persuade North Korea to dismantle all its nuclear weapons. Obama declared North Korea a "grave threat" to the world and pledged that the new U.N. sanctions on the communist regime will be aggressively enforced.

The independent International Crisis Group think tank, meanwhile, said the North's massive stockpile of chemical weapons is no less serious a threat to the region than its nuclear arsenal.

It said the North is believed to have between 2,500 and 5,000 tons of chemical weapons, including mustard gas, phosgene, blood agents and sarin. These weapons can be delivered with ballistic missiles and long-range artillery and are "sufficient to inflict massive civilian casualties on South Korea."

"If progress is made on rolling back Pyongyang's nuclear ambitions, there could be opportunities to construct a cooperative diplomatic solution for chemical weapons and the suspected biological weapons program," the think tank said in a report released Wednesday night.

All these weak words bother me. I will be incredibly surprised if this administration ever takes action against anything. I guess we can HOPE that things CHANGE.

I think these missles are being fired in an attempt to get us to show our hand.

China and Russia would benefit from the live intelligence they would gain on our missle defense capabilities.

they also are trying to gauge just how passive Obama is to see what all they can get away with. China wants Taiwan, Russia wants the Eastern bloc and its Oil infrastructure...they need a weak US not willing to "Judge other cultures" to get it.

Obama was elected on a message of weakness, it was read loud and clear around the world. They knew it though atleast, judging by Biden's comments on Obama being tested.

Did I say anything about nuclear weapons? There are stronger things than words that are still softer than violence.

But, even with Obama at the helm, I believe that if the US is fired upon, the war will have started before their missile hits the ground.

Thats why you use the AEGIS. It has already shot down a satellite. Of course, these are point defense weapons. If the re-entry vehicle isn't within a specified range of the ships, you don't take the shot.

The GBI's based in Alaska and California are untested, and even though they are "operational" they are really still in testing . Obama wants to cut the program anyway and a miss might give him ammo to do it.

I think it is time for the CIA to send some porno chicks to the Gargoyle.
They will be much more effective than any defense system.03-lmfao

Seriously...I really do not understand why BO would want to cut spending on this type of defense system.03-banghead I have made it clear many times that I think our military has been directed all over the globe and made to overstep its bounds by power hungry politicians...but...I have NO problem with this type of defense spending and even if funding was not dependent on governmental theft for its funding ...I would voluntarily contribute to such a program... If it directly protects our landmass against attack...I am fine with it and support it. 04-cheers

We need to get China to ***** slap that escapee from the Lolly Pop Guild, after all, China has the most influence over them. But Claw does raise an interesting point about China and Russia learning what our abilities might be. But then again, we shot down that satellite last year and that thing was moving much faster than one of the little imp's ding-dong rockets.

A satellite's movement is predictable. A rocket's is not. In this case, even the guys shooting the rocket aren't sure where it will go.

(?!)

Once it's up, the trajectory is very predictable. Things like the SCUD make it a little less so, but that is more a matter of small deviations. I would expect that the period of time where a rocket's trajectory is unpredictable is only a matter of seconds.

This depends on whether it is ballistic or guided. If it has any guidance or avoidance systems, it will be harder to hit than a satellite. The other thing that makes rockets harder to hit is that it only flys its path once. Satellites you can observe for months while plottting a solution.

It's interesting how each of the world's dictators get a few months of major media ink, then they basically hide and it's off to the next one, then the next one. It's like a cycle.

Soon you won't hear much of Kim Jong-Il anymore, then Hugo Chavez will start breathing fire for a few months. And then he'll go quiet and suddenly Fidel/Raul Castro will start some fire n' brimstone talk. And so on and so forth.
