Obama appoints 31 year old law student to oversee GM restructuring
No, I'm not kidding.
I guess one way to keep from appointing another tax cheat is to appoint someone whose parents were claiming as a dependent just a few years ago.
As we've seen with Obama, experience and an education in economics are SOOOO overrated.

RE: Obama appoints 31 year old law student to oversee GM restructuring
That's ok. I want this administration to fail as quickly and dramatically as possible. Appointing someone like this will delay any sort of meaningful progress for many months, and ultimately poor decisions will be made throughout.
I just hope the full consequences of all of this will be seen in 3.5 years, and not stretch to 5.

RE: Obama appoints 31 year old law student to oversee GM restructuring
Quote:“Brian grasps both the economics and the politics about as quickly as I’ve seen anyone do this,” said Lawrence H. Summers, the head of the National Economic Council who is not known for being patient whenever he believes an analysis is sub-par — or disagrees with his own. “And there he was in the Roosevelt Room, speaking up vigorously to make the point that the costs we were going to incur giving Fiat a chance were no greater than some of the hidden costs of liquidation.”
Mr. Deese’s route to the auto table at the White House was anything but a straight line. He is the son of a political science professor at Boston College (his father) and an engineer who works in renewable energy (his mother). He grew up in the Boston suburb of Belmont and attended Middlebury College in Vermont. He went to Washington to work on aid issues and was quickly hired by Nancy Birdsall, a widely respected authority on the effectiveness of international aid and the founder of the Center for Global Development.
But he wanted to learn domestic issues as well, and soon ended up working as an assistant for Gene Sperling, who 17 years ago in the Clinton White House played a similar role as economic policy prodigy. Eventually, Mr. Deese headed to Yale for his law degree.
He's not as green as you're making him out to be.
I went to school with a guy like this. His first name was Aaron. One of my classmates clerked for Al gore while Gore was VP, but Aaron turned them and a Federal Appeals court clerkship down to go into private enterprise. Quite simply, Aaron was one of the smartest people I have ever encountered. He asked a series of questions in class that absolutely stumped counsel for a massive class action suit, and had a Federal Appeals Court judge come by and personally introduce himself.
Aaron looked like a 17 year old kid and routinely dressed in stuff like this:
He took the Patent Bar and reportedly achieved a perfect score (?), which is staggering given how many attorneys fail it.
I don't think I've ever met anyone as intellectually impressive as him in my life, and I completely misjudged him based on his appearance. I wont ever make that mistake again.

I'm with you in that I don't like when someone who is young is dismissed simply because they are young. I have encountered plenty of mature managers who are complete idiots but essentially got to their position by being the most senior.
However, I disagree on the assignment of a lawyer that has no manufacturing experience to solve what is clearly a manufacturing dilemma.

I had a neighbor just like the friend you describe Artifice ... the guy was by all definitions, a pure genius .....
BUT ...
When the Electricity would go out on a Fall Day, I would always walk out to the Highway and observe the huge tree my Genius Friend would always Throw onto the Power Line.
So being a Super Genius in Books and Theory, is NOT the same as being a Genius in the Real World.
When he needed Fire Wood Cut in later years, I would go down and drop all the trees he wanted me to drop that were close to power lines and we had no other Electrical Problems from this venue.
However, after the 2nd Tree on the Power Line Gaff within the same year, my Utility Company was not so generous and started Charging the Genius for all the Damage he was causing to the Power Lines, Power Poles, and Transformers since he was the First House into a Subdivision and closest to the Main High Voltage Transformers, he always caused them damage.
So even though your friend was a Super Conductor of Pure Legal Genius, does not mean he could tie his own shoe laces if his shoes were secured by Velcro Strips.

Was there anything above your signature? Dayum.
In all seriousness, that's a legitimate point. It is a little curious. I wouldn't dismiss him because he's young, or even inexperienced, but to not have a background at all in that industry is perplexing.
Then again, you could make the case that its time for an outside® approach. The old ways have failed.

It's so much more than that. It's powerful political players (unions, management, lobbyists) angling for a bigger piece. It's a culture where mediocrity is above average, quality is soft, and engineering practice is poor. It's an industry w/ deep supply chains, and market forces from around the world.

never underestimate the power of the media.
as for the "Genius" who is yet to finish law school, as WFB famously quipped:
Quote:I'd rather entrust the government of the United States to the first 400 people listed in the Boston telephone directory than to the faculty of Harvard University.
William F. Buckley, Jr.
To really solve this problem, Obama should've enlisted one of Daly's thugs from Chicago to properly deal with the UAW on terms they can understand.
Everybody knows book smart people who are dumb is a brick with common sense and street smart related things.

Once worked with a guy who got hired because he was a genius in electronics. He could explain how things worked right down to the atomic level. Hand the guy a screw driver, which was a vital tool for the job, and he was totally lost.
