EMU79,

Totally agree with you and Warrior about the wealth of the NCAA and the need for rules changes. I think that they need to admit that football is different, and that year round mandatory team training is a necessary part of todays game....If nothing else from a player safety standpoint.

That being said, football scholarships should pay room and board for the entire year, and tuition when the players are taking a full load (12 credit hours +) during fall and winter semesters, and a realistic load (3 credit hours) during the summer term....IMO.

RE: Eastern Michigan Football Season Preview
Athlete can only take up to 6 credits(NCAA rule) if they want to get ahead in studies or remain (or get) eligible for the fall. Too many coaches had their kids take 9 to 12 credit hours so that they could get eligible.

Student athletes are able to get their classes paid for during the summer. It is up how much money is available and priority amongst the teams. It could pay for 6, but most likely it will pay for 3 credits.

The other issue is that most of the athletes may have exhausted their financial aid money from fall and spring, leaving them with nothing left for summer.

RE: Eastern Michigan Football Season Preview
wow, i haven't checked the board in a couple days, and this is some interesting stuff.

I agree with EMU79, it's a shoddy system when the players have to get bridge cards to make it through the summer. i don't begrudge them getting the cards, but i'm sure if the NCAA cared enough they could make it so the states aren't picking up the tab because of poor NCAA rules. seems like it might be one of those things that won't change just because nobody talks loudly enough about it.

if i had to make it on their fiscal situation now (as a 27 year old), i would probably screw it up pretty badly. I don't want to think how badly i would have screwed up when i was 19 or 20. I'm impressed that they can pull it together because they care so much about football.

It also makes more sense when you hear about athletes leaving school to spend time at home. i'm sure the reason for a lot of that is the kids can't afford to be in D-I.

EMU2008,
I agree with you on the lack of communication. Maybe after 4 years I'll finally completely understand it.

WIN,
To my knowledge my player has not got any credits for football, or an of the other areas you mentioned....I'm not sure though. I'll check into that.

I am really curious as to how the players in the elite programs are compensated in the summer vs. our players....Are the UofM players in the same situation in the summer?

EagleAttack-

Prior to the Fall of 1996, varsity athletes were able to use their sport to satisfy the Phys Ed requirement. From the Fall of 1996 to now, all student-athletes have to take PEGN 210: Lifetime Wellness and Fitness.

You can still get the Varsity sport credit, but you can only use it during the season and only use it twice. I got to use the track credit twice when I needed to add an extra credit, just in case I dropped a class(which I ever did).

Trackman,

Thanks for the info, that's a good way to do it. During an athletes respective season, its good to have a cushion in case you need to drop a class...otherwise you become ineligible once below 12 credits. I know guys are encouraged to take 15 credits in the fall for that reason.

By the way, what events did you run for the eagles in your track days?
