HEADS UP: Modern Wing @ Art Institute Grand Opening
The new Modern Wing at The Art Institute has its grand opening for the public today. The ceremony starts at 9AM and the ribbon cutting is at 10AM. Free admission for May 16-22. Also, Greater Chicago Food Depository will have stations on Michigan Ave. accepting cans of non-perishable foods. This is great exposure for GCFD, so please bring your cans and lavish yourself in the culture Chicago has to offer!

Gorgeous building, and one of Piano's best.

If you have a chance before you go, get some background on Piano and his work. Pay special attention to the details, like structural connections and joints between materials. Look at corners and transitions. Piano refines these things to an art form.

Of course, the point of all of this is the art, which Im excited for. Th AIC has really annoyed me the past few years with the lack of anything modern, surreal, or contemporary. Im glad to see its gotten such a good home.

With that said (and I understand theres a good cause with the GCFD), but theres not way Im going near there for a while. its going to be a madhouse. Ill go on an off-day in a few weeks. In the meantime, this weekend I really want to see the Olafur Eliasson exhibit at the MCA. Looks sublime

I was downtown for a meeting yesterday and had a few spare minutes so I walked over to the new wing and found it to be as beautiful as advertised. I recommend you take the footbridge from the middle of Millenium Park to the top of the new wing. At the top there's an open rooftop space where you can look back at Millenium Park, a spectacular view.
