WVU's bats showed no signs of cooling off as the Mountaineers pounded out 15 hits en route to a 19-3 crushing of Notre Dame in game one of a three-game weekend series. It was the worst loss ever for the Irish at Frank Eck Stadium.

West Virginia, now 11-2 in the Big East and 28-7 overall, jumped on the Irish early, scoring three runs in the top of the first to move out on top. That was just the start of a series of big innings for the Mountaineers, who plated four runs in the fourth and fifth innings and added six more in the seventh.

On the mound, starter Jarryd Summers pitched comfortably with the excellent support. He scattered seven hits over seven innings and gave up just two earned runs. Control was a key for Summers, who walked just one batter while striking out four. Reliever Andrew Saab came on to get the final six outs of the game, which he did without yielding any runs.

Six Mountaineers had multiple hits in the game, led by catcher Tobias Streich's four safeties in six at-bats. Justin Parks and Jedd Gyorko each had three run home runs, while Streich (3) Dan DiBartolomeo (2), Vince Belnome and Colin Durbobrow all smacked doubles. The Irish, meanwhile, were limited to just one extra base hit. Gyorko had five RBI while Parks and Belnome added three each.

West Virginia extended its best ever start in Big East play, and remains tied with USF atop the league standings. The Mountaineers and Irish meet again on Saturday at 3:00 PM.

I just hope the Mountaineers keep up this play against the Irish. If we do that, next weekend will be for all the marbles...
