I confess this gets me enthused. It's conceivable that you could begin planting crops that mature in a few weeks.

Phytoremediation of contaminated sites.
Carbon sequestration.
Efficient production of biofuel stocks.

These could be big.

Buy that land in AZ, it's gonna keep growing!

Yea, until they run out of water, which is a more immediate concern than running out of electricity..

That's why I left. Well, one reason anyway. But, demographics can't be ignored. You get cheap energy in AZ, and bigger populations, and they'll build the pipeline for water. The midwest will be returned to farmland. Urban development will be undone (including the phytoremediation I mentioned), and it will be returned to productive, beneficial farmland. Farmland that doesn't need to use the large reservoirs.

It will happen.

BTW, here's an interesting survey on what $200K can buy in real estate.
http://realestate.msn.com/slideshow.aspx...d=19001301

It's interesting on the surface, but dig deeper. Look at the perception of how much more you get in Phx, even compared to Cle or Det. That will keep driving people to the desert.

(Side note: I was stunned to see LA prices had dropped so much. And equally stunned at the shanty listed for sale in Sea.)

solar thermal. solar thermal 03-banghead

Anyway, what does this have to do w/ AZ? It's my foray into futurism. AZ is still the #2 fastest growing state, w/ desertish neighbor UT at #1, and NV at #6.

The warm climate is appealing for many, and allows for large homes b/c of reduced construction needs. And w/ solar they have cheap energy w/ low distribution costs.

The big drawback is water. However, as I have proposed occasionally, build a pipeline to get water away from flooded areas (ND for example) and get it to dry areas.

In response to that proposal, people have pointed out there already exists resistance to such a proposal.

However, w/ better plant growth, the fertile regions of the country will be asked to produce more...more food and now more energy crops. To accomplish this they will reclaim urban/suburban land for agriculture. I also remind people that MI is shrinking, Ohio and PA are barely breaking even. That reduces their political clout as well.

Despite little water, people are still moving to the desert areas...and as we've seen w/ canals, reservoirs, drainage systems and other responses to natures challenges...they will get what they need to thrive.

ah, your inner Nietzche

can they damn up the Grand Caynon? of course not, but if they did that would be one big reservoir.

I'm thinking this Solar stuff could be the business to get into in the next decade to cash in, if it can do what they are billing it up as.
