We need a Cromwell ;) to speak to congress
inspired by RCHorn, got me to thinking of this famous speech. Could we not use a leader like this today? The metro-sexual males of today would run for cover. What I wouldn't give to hear something along these lines said to Barney Frank and company...
Cromwell's speech to Rump Parliment when he disbanded them in 1653
It's hard not to think about Congress today, when reading this:
Quote:
"It is high time for Me to put an End to your Sitting in this Place, which you have dishonoured by your Contempt of all Virtue, and defiled by your Practice of every Vice;
Ye are a factious Crew and Enemies of all good Government; Ye are a Pack of mercenary Wretches and would, like Esau, Sell your Country for a Mess of Pottage; and like Judas, betray your God for a few Pieces of Money; Is there a single Virtue now remaining amongst you?
Is there one Vice that you do not possess? Ye have no more Religion than my horse! Gold is your God: Which of you have not bartered your Conscience for Bribes?
Is there a Man amongst you that has the least care for the Good of the Commonwealth?
Ye sordid prostitutes! Have you not defiled this Sacred Place, and turned the Lord's Temple into a Den of Thieves by your immoral Principles and wicked Practices? Ye are grown intolerably odious to the whole Nation.
Your Country therefore calls upon me to cleanse the Augean Stable, by putting a final Period to your Iniquitous Proceedings in this House, and which by God's Help, and the strength He has given Me, I now come to do.
I command ye, therefore, upon the Peril of your Lives, to depart immediately out of this Place;
Go! Get out! Make haste, ye Venal Slaves, begone!"
also, he deserves credit for this, in speech to Scotland
Quote: Is it therefore infallibly agreeable to the Word of God, all that you say? I beseech you, in the bowels of Christ, think it possible you may be mistaken........
....I pray you read the Twenty-eighth of Isaiah, from the fifth to the fifteenth verse. And do not scorn to know that it is the Spirit that quickens and giveth life.
The Lord give you and us understanding to do that which is well-pleasing in His sight. Committing you to the grace of God, I rest, your humble servant,
OLIVER CROMWELL
they didn't, and well....the rest is history.
file this under Climatic points in history, if done right, destined to make a great, though controversial, Epic Movie one day. possibly titled: "King Killer, Warts and All"

This is clearly a satanic speech.

GG .... we hear this all the time now ....
In the form of Obama talking about himself as the Deity ....
The roles simply have been reversed to where Obama is the Harlot that is selling out the United States.

you should like him Fo, he didn't believe in Kings/Monarchs...chopped Charles I head off actually, and refused the Crown(while ironically ending up as a defacto military dictator for most part). for the 17th century he ran a pretty Libertarian oriented govt. for the most part. first attempt at a Republic, didn't last that long but it made its point.
When monarchist dig your dead body up, years afterwords, and then behead you posthumously, I'd take it as a honor.
He was basically their George Washington kinda, walking away from being a Royal Family and absolute power for himself and his heirs. Strong defender of religious liberty, probably influenced the Founding Fathers alot, good and bad. I'm sure Jefferson's paranoia over standing armies goes back to this period and the Major Generals.

oh there's much you wouldn't like, in the 21st century, just saying overall in a 17th century context. He was a Puritan, though he did value order over his ideals, while in power. He did some things that you probably would not consider libertarian at all domestically as well. However, for example John Derbyshire who is basically a Libertarian(and English) at NRO likes him, which suprised me because he's a darwinian atheist as well.
its linked to his Puritian beliefs, but basically he didn't beleive in human Kings, he beleived in only One King and law giver(Jesus) and man should never play that role. Hated Monarchs, and once he gained power he called himself "Lord Protector" and tried to setup a commonwealth/republic in the 17th century. lasted to his death and he was bascially/practically a military dictator at the time. He was offered the Crown and refused it, again because of ideological/religious reasons.
years after his death once the Royalist took back over, they dug up his body and beheaded him(in payback I suppose for beheading Charles I). He was a monumental, and controversial to this day(see Irish Catholics for one example) figure of our shared history with Great Britain.
Cromwell also gave what amounts as the First, of several, "Evil Empire" speeches when making his case for War against Spain.
Much of the Carribean is English speaking/influenced today in large part due to his "Western Design" foreign policy to take it to the Spaniards.
