Tough break for Rouco. The numbers don't justify giving him another year, but the circumstances arguably should have.
Whoever takes that job could be poised for early success. Good luck in your search, Panthers.

I heard rumors of this in Hot Springs. Also heard he may end up at NC State as an assistant (and take Freddy with him). I met Freddy at the team hotel in H.S.--- seemed like a great guy.

RE: MBB: Sergio Rouco out as head coach at FIU
We heard the same things Kajun (actually, you may have heard it from us, I can't remember) while we were in da H.S.
Sergio was a colorful character and always had a good time with our students. He also stated that he wished he could've played every game at Diddle, due to the atmosphere (or something along those lines).
I hope Sergio gets a shot some place else, because he wasn't exactly dealt an easy hand down at FIU. He did the best with what he had while there and had some talent on those teams. The problem always seemed to be getting all cogs to fit into the machine. From what I understand, it was difficult to get the players (being from other countries and whatnot) to stay in town over the summer.
From WKU's standpoint, that's what has been the catalyst for our success. Most of the players stay in BG over the summer, work out together, eat together, and mostly work on "bonding". That way, when practice starts there's not "getting used to each other" time. It's worked wonders for us.

I know that Dahbeed and I discussed it, but cannot remember whether he told me or I told him.
I wish we'd hire Sergio as an assistant if he'd bring Freddy
Going to miss Rouco. He was a cool cat. Reminded me of the Spanish version of legendary Morehead State coach Dick Fick. Back in college, some of our fans were telling Fick he needed to lose weight, and before you knew it Fick was in the stands eating a piece of pizza with one of the heckling students (during the game).

RE: MBB: Sergio Rouco out as head coach at FIU
I have a feeling Frederico will somehow end up at a Big 6 school. He's just too good to hang around in mediocrity. Sorry FIU fans!
I wonder, really, who they'll try to bring in. I know FAU has gone after some names (Walters, Rex and Jarvis, Mike) and have been somewhat successful. Will FIU try to go the same route and get someone with a recognized name, or just work from scratch?
It's too bad he's already taken the High Point job, because former WKU assistant Scott Cherry would've been an excellent hire for them. He knows the conference and the major players. He also knows how to coach and has a good pedigree. Oh well!
I'm interested in seeing what names pop up! I'm just hoping one name, Matt Killcullen, doesn't.

There are rumors that this is the next head coach at F I U!
I don't know how I feel about that, but I think Pete Garcia would be making his first really bad hire as an AD at F I U. Hope the rumors are wrong, but if not, hope that I am wrong.

Really? Isaiah Thomas?
Well, that definitely fills the "big name" slot. Now, as to his coaching acumen, well... How can I say this nicely?

May be a good choice. Just because somebody isn't a good NBA coach, doesn't mean they wouldn't be a good college coach and vice versa. Its two different skill sets. He may have the star power to get some good recruits to listen. And there are lots of good recruits in FL. And the star power generates some instant fan interest. Who knows. Might be a match made in heaven.
