Obama's energy policy BLOWS!!!
Quote:INTERIOR SECRETARY KEN SALAZAR, THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION'S energy architect, apparently thinks the answer to all our energy worries is blowing in the wind.

Sensible Drilling: Gone With the Wind?

Quote:Salazar in his speech conveniently ignored a study by the U.S. Geological Survey that estimates a total of 1.5 trillion barrels of oil in place in 17 oil-shale zones in the Eocene Green River Formation in the Piceance Basin, which is located in northwestern Colorado.

Why worry about facts?

Quote:How "significant" is 1.5 trillion barrels?

"Let's see if I can put it in perspective," gibes McKenna in an e-mail. "Since oil was discovered in Titusville in 1857, we have used about one trillion barrels." He is talking about the entire planet, not just the U.S.

Not all of that shale oil can be extracted using current technology. Experts tell me that today's drillers might be able to get at 500 billion to 700 billion barrels. Still, when you consider that Saudi Arabia's known reserves are an estimated 250 billion barrels, that is a lot of black gold.

Can't worry about America's quality of life or dependence on foreign oil can we? We have to save the planet first even if it means killing every man woman and child in the US!!!

RE: Obama's energy policy BLOWS!!!
Unfortunately, shale oil is not much of a source of gasoline. We would have to convert to alternative petroleum fuels to get much fuel benefit from shale oil. It would make a nice complement to ethanol, which we could make in significantly greater quantities from Latin American sugar cane. Use the ethanol to replace gasoline, and the shale oil to replace other oil uses.

It's not a great product environmentally. In particular, the processes currently in vogue use large amounts of water, and the areas of the US that have lots of shale oil don't have lots of water.

It's also not the most efficient source. Extraction consumes fuel, and depending upon the process, you get something between 2 to 6 barrels of shale oil for every barrel of fuel used.

All those things being the case, shale oil needs to be part of the mix going forward. We need to make a major R&D effort to find solutions to the problems with shale oil. Just as with nuclear and coal and electricity. There are problems with each, but we need to be about finding solutions.

We could learn a lot from Brasil:
1. Use an "all hands on deck" approach rather than picking favored technologies.
2. Use what works today, rather than waiting on something to come out of the lab; lab solutions tend to remain "20 years away" forever.
3. Don't be afraid to let the private sector make a buck or two finding solutions; Brasil would not have succeeded without allowing Petrobras to make money off it, just like our space program would not have succeeded without letting the aerospace companies make money off it.
