Obama refers to U.S. in third party reference
Obama Calls America "Arrogant" During Speech In Strasbourg

Quote:The only attitude I would like to see changed is the one from the President of the USA, who doesn't seem to like anything about the USA. Jimmy Carter is sure to be enjoying this, since he will soon be not known as the most America hating president ever. And, yes, this does make me mad.

If he is going to make a point like this shouldn't he have made it by saying we?

I have never been bothered much by arrogance. It's arrogance without the substance to back it up that's always bothered me. America's arrogance has never really bothered me until the last three months or so.

We may lack the substance to back it up now, but we've lacked the will to back it up for a generation. From Korea to Vietnam to Iraq to Somalia to the Balkans to Afghanistan to Iraq again, with other stops scattered in between, we've gotten into a succession of wars that we did not intend to win. How did those work for us?

If we are not going to fight to win, then there is nothing to be gained by fighting at all.

How is the US any more arrogant than Germany, France, UK, Canada? They've allowed an elite caste to impose their social programs on entire countries, intentionally and vocally. They have violated all kinds of liberties in doing so, and necessarily utilize hypocritical reasoning to justify their activity. And to top it off, they criticize others who don't make their same mistakes. What could be more arrogant?

War is Horrible. Many Americans cannot stomach the horror of WAR being brought to them in their living rooms, every night in full living color. When your enemy knows this you already lost. What is arrogant is to send our precious sons and daughters to fight for our American liberty and democracy which they believe in, without allowing them to use their training to win. That is more than arrogant, it stupidity. I believe that if you are going to War, you fight to win, your enemy is going to use everything in it's power to win, so why shouldn't we. Including using the media for their propaganda against you. The battle is on all fronts.

National Pride is arrogance. Every country thinks themselves better than the other. War have been fought over nothing but pride. Pride is one of the seven deadly sins.

If you are going to use force, use overwhelming force.
If you are not prepared to deal with the consequences of using overwhelming force, then it is not time to use force.

Well call me arrogant.

What's the opposite of pride? Why should I not be prideful of my nation? Should I show disdain like Michelle Obama?

America has freed millions upon millions of people. Both WWI and WWII were quagmires until we landed on the shores of France.

America is still looked to as the moral leaders of the world, other countries are not looking up to France or China, and expecting exceptionalism.

when that changes we have a problem.

Obama is a fool of course. We have to weather the storm

I would hope that you actually listened to more than that one line of the speech. Go ahead check it out, it's the video in the article that I've linked. He clearly says "in America" and "America" referring to it as a place, it is a place isn't it. Do you expect him to say "In We", "In Us", or something like that. It wouldn't make since to say it those ways wouldn't it. Bottom line is that what he said was the equivalent to "In the United States" and he didn't say it as if he wasn't including himself.

Also, the link that's provided at the top of the thread only accounts for about 2 seconds of the actual speech. He also gets on Europe for being unfairly anti-American even going to the point of saying that America can't do it all alone, but Europe definitely can't do it without America. Seems like pretty fair and diplomatic talk to me.

I've never been the type of person that plays the political party game like most here so maybe I'm more willing to actually look beyond a 2 second clip of a speech that took way longer than that.

It has worked well for HP. They are building printers in Vietnam in order to pay wages as low or lower than China.
