This is where unions can get you.
This is what can happen when unions start to actually influence the worker and it's not just limited to Canada. I'm highly disappointed in this but I know a good deal of union workers have nothing to do with this.

Windsor auto workers seize shuttered plant
- cbc
CALGARY (CBC) - A group of disgruntled workers at a recently closed auto parts supply company in Windsor, Ont. have taken over the plant.
In the latest bizarre twist in a saga that has been brewing since two auto plants in the area shut down early last week, about a dozen workers occupied the Aradco plant Tuesday night. They have welded the doors shut from the inside and say they will not leave until they get what they are owed.
Work at the Aradco plant stopped last week because of a dispute between the plant owners and Chrysler, which has mused publicly about pulling out of its Canadian operations unless unionized workers make substantial concessions.
The Canadian Auto Workers Union that represents the Aradco workers say that in the wake of the shutdown, the workers are owed money for severance pay, vacation pay, and termination pay totalling $1.7 million.
The plant's owner, Catalina Precision Products Ltd. has offered the workers four weeks of severance pay or about $200,000 in total for all 80 workers.
The plant builds parts for Chrysler. Since last week, Chrysler has been trying to go in and collect parts and tools it says are its, but the workers are not allowing it. They have been blocking trucks from coming on to the property. Union representatives say the workers fear that if the tools and parts are removed, they will have no negotiating power.
"Some of the workers here have decided to take over the plant. That's the only thing they have in order to try to get the monies that are owing to them," said Gerry Farnham, president of the CAW local representing the workers.

I'm sorry...Destruction of private property is a crime. If this was a drug gang or some FLDS church members....they would have the damn SWAT teams sent in on their asses. I guess now.. union workers have immunity from police raids?03-lmfao

There was something similar that happened here in Chicago when a local window company closed its doors. However, as far as I know they didnt damage property. In fact they spent their time during the sit-in cleaning the shop and it was an entirely peaceful ordeal.

The eventual outcome is the plant is being sold and all the workers are being hired back by the new owners.

Policemen are union members, too.

I say file a trespassing complaint against them plus charges for any damage they do to the plant. Then I'd turn off the electric and water and at the same time I'd hire my own security force to make sure no one could get to the plant to resupply the misfits with food or water. I'd keep a tab going on every nickle spent on time or damages and I'd sue them for it.

How come when ever union workers don't gt their way they become militant?

Sorry, in this case I think the workers have a legit argument. They are owed (past tense) the money. I'd be pissed too if I worked and then my employer said he was yanking my vacation, severence, etc. You all would as well.

Nah, I think this might be a better example of a union's value:

There's a legal means to collecting money owed. The union should do what it collects union dues for and use the legal system to collect it. Resorting to scumbag militant tactics hardly gains them sympathy.

I'm not concerned with their case. I'm concerned with their crime. We have courts for their case. Take it there and and stop trespassing and destroying private property. This is typical union thuggery. They form them using coercion and now they think they can strong arm the company.
Go the hell home and hire a lawyer like non-union workers have to in situations like this.

It's insensitivity to people's plight that lead to extreme measures like labor unions. How about throwing the Chrysler owners in jail...for outright theft. These workers' have had their personal property stolen. That cannot be overlooked.
If the courts need to handle this, then they need to do so much more quickly.

It's funny that you say each person has a right to defend themselves, then these people are taking something of value in lieu of not getting paid.

It's funny that you talk about not being a citizen, then tell these folks to follow the laws of the land. Seems to me they're following the most fundamental set of laws...pay what you owe from a legit contract, or we'll take it.

I get your point.
I'm not familiar with the Canadian system of justice...but...I doubt ours is any less effective at addressing these issues quickly....regardless...I believe you only use violence in self defense of violence. I this case, I agree that there is fraud and the workers are entitled to compensation. I just don't think damaging private property is the appropriate response.

I agree with you that damaging private propety is inappropriate. Frankly, that's a lose-lose response...no one wins. I'd rather see these guys take over the factory and build themselves brand new autos as compensation. A little far-fetched I know, but that seems much more constructive. (And would probably get much better play in the court of public opinon).

I tend to agree with most of your opinions but I differ with this one. No matter how emotional we get in these things, we all know that stealing from someone you believe has stolen from you is wrong. This should be resolved by the courts, not anarchy, and just about anyone who has ventured into our court system will tell you it moves slowly. Having these people move to the front of the line and possibly bypassing more important cases is expecting too much.

As for your contract argument, well, how many mortgage contracts are being rewritten these days and what about the uproar over the contractual bonuses of AIG employees? It seems you're damned if you do and damned if you don't. Public opinion is now the driving force in the honoring of contracts.

In a system of private arbitration(no government/anarchy) this would be handled much quicker and efficiently. Dispute Resolution Organizations (DRO's)operating in the free market would be incentivized through competition for customers to quickly resolve contract disputes. Our coercive system has NO incentive to improve customer service and reduce costs. It has the theft of the public purse at its disposal to fund its activities and therefor is innately slow and wasteful.

Sorry... I just could not resist pitching voluntarist philosophy on this one.04-cheers
