.

I bet the Fed is trukin' the Nicotine into Toebacky Country by the Super Tanker Loads ....

My ignorant clan eats up about $400-$500 dollars a month on these foolish Coffin Nails and don't seem to care if their prices are raised by $Dollars-a-Day$ - - they will still make Cig Runs and Smoke Like Chimney's ...

One day soon, when they have to be normal hungry and sick human beings, who have to chose between Medications and Food, and they can't eat their Cig Butts, maybe they will STOP SMOKING then ..... 03-banghead 04-chairshot 03-nutkick

Thats pretty much the price they are in Chicago. There is also a $1 tax increase coming from the state

Not that I smoke, and the state ban is the best thing that ever happened. I cant tell you how nice it is going to bars and concerts now and not walking out smelling like an ashtray.

So, to please the masses, the state came in and restricted a business owner's freedom to serve whomever he/she wished to serve. Yeah, sounds like the America I wanna live in.

I'm not singling out Illinois as my county did it as well (other than bars), but it is unconstitutional, IMO. Personally, I don't smoke in restaurants. I don't even smoke in my home. ...but that decision should be left up to the person that put his blood, sweat, and tears into that business.

I like the Canadian approach. Or what at least used to be the approach in Alberta. A business establishment decides to be either smoking or non-smoking. There are plenty of each, and you can always find a place to fit your persuasion. The market determines which one there are more of (actually think there were more smoking than non the last time I was there, not sure how it is today).

I think Fo's anarchocapitalist approach works well for this.

Absolutely!....The marketplace is capable of handling these types of problems much better than the governmental "one size fits all" solutions.

I recently went to Pinehurst on a golf outing and ate breakfast at a diner that recently went smoke free. The owner stated that his business had actually increased since he made the change and the same customers still come in and patronize him. They just go outside to smoke. He claimed that he had almost no complaints from the patrons.

The same would probably happen if someone opened up a "smoking only" diner...but...of course that is NOT allowed in the current paradigm in NC.

A business owner should be allowed to make these decisions on his own without governmental intervention. Workers are NOT forced to work in an environment that they feel is unhealthy. If the marketplace was allowed to handle this...there would be plenty of job opportunities to meet a employees preferences.

Is there a law in NC that doesn't allow smoking only restaurants? Because there is a nice steakhouse in Oxford that has a sign on the door that says, "This is a smoking establishment. Suck it up or dine elsewhere."

Since I've got the word on the $1.35 tax on a box of cigarettes, I've wondered how Gov. Perdue expects us to keep our #1 cash crop alive. Might as well move on to hemp.

Restricting a public health hazard is unconstitutional?

Also, smoking lounges are still legal, if thats the type of business someone wants to open. I honestly can't say i've seen a dropoff at any bars..if anything theres more people (this is year 2 of the ban and at this point everyone has pretty much gotten accustomed to going outside when they need to light up). The only ones still bitching are casinos.

I was under the impression that restaurants must have "non smoking" areas. My wife is a county health director...she informs me that I am wrong....She says you must "post" that info. I guess thats what this place is doing. Thanks for the correction.

Industrial hemp was stopped by Randolph Hearst a long time ago. It was challenging the Hearst timber holdings for paper production. Hearst used his influence buying of politicians to make it illegal.

The funny thing is that planting industrial hemp would be very harmful to marijuana production due to cross- pollination. Industrial hemp cross-pollination would reduce the THC levels of marijuana. The last thing a Pot grower whats is industrial hemp to be close to his crop.

If public health hazards need restricting...then...Why don't we end the government. It is the biggest polluter.04-cheers

Cars are health hazards, so are fast food and and faster women. The one thing I was always amazed with is that when researchers gave something to a mouse, and it could be anything, they all developed cancer.

For some reason I believe that NC and other states are just itching for legalization since we have one of the biggest legal hemp "studies" programs in the nation. I think that they are trying to get the practice down before the legalization.

black market smokes, if you get busted you can say: "Hey, atleast its not weed"

before long we'll have underground Bars and clubs to avoid the excessive tax rates.

If you have an Indian Reservation close by, go there and buy your smokes, they are exempt from the taxes. But they may limit how much you can buy.

When in Texas I used to smoke Cohiba Red Dots at home in my gameroom. (but never in my car, you couldn't get the smell out). Since moving to Georgia, I quit.. wife getting pregnant, no place to smoke them without the smoke getting in the house, etc.

But I still have my humidor and one set aside for a special occasion.

Well, there are rules about how you can/can't operate a motor vehicle, and there are emission standards as well.

Food is certainly regulated...although thats questionable with some of McDonalds output. The difference is if someone chooses to down 3 double quarter pounders with cheese a day, it dosent really affect me one way or another (outside of a heavier burden on the health system). However, when Im sitting at a bar (destroying my OWN liver) and someone decides to light up..everyone in that room is directly affected, whether they want to be or not. One person's rights end where anothers begin.

I guess my point is...its really not a big deal to go outside for a couple minutes when you need to smoke.

I saw from the highway a test plot about 15 miles South of Greenville on Highway 11 a couple of years ago. It was easily identifiable. The stuff was about 10 feet tall in about a 3 to 4 acre field. I never heard who was doing the research.

apparently Obama is raising that tax with the SCHIP scam

http://blogs.miaminewtimes.com/riptide/2...ht_jus.php

Quote:Like thousands of others across South Florida, he now earns a living in the heart of America's cigar industry, where some experts estimate 75 percent of the nation's 272 million hand-rolled cigars originate every year.

Enjoy it while it lasts. Miami's cigar-makers are scrambling to survive past April 1, when President Obama's new State Children's Health Insurance Plan takes effect -- and brings with it a 900 percent tax increase on every single cigar made or imported to the States.

"I'm probably going to lose some of these guys," says Al Gutman, a former state senator who has run Cuban Crafters Cigars since leaving politics after pleading guilty to a felony Medicare fraud charge in 1999. "I don't know how many yet, and I hope it doesn't happen. But we're going to get hurt -- there's no question."

Obama's program will bring health insurance to thousands of poor kids, largely through an increased tax on cigarette packs. Cigar producers are quick to say they support the SCHIP program -- and even the increased cigarette taxes, which amount to double the current levy.

900% = 45 cents per cigar I beleive.

This does not even take into account how badly this will hurt the people of Nicaragua, Honduras, and the Dominican Republic. The cigar industry has provided some of the best jobs available in those countries. Their economies are going to be crushed by these taxes, and their poor people (who are actually poor, not like the "poor" people in the U.S. who will benefit from this, who live at 2-3x the poverty line) are going to suffer.

But hey, who cares right? It's not like they have votes that the Democrats can buy.

If Obama eliminates the trade restictions with Cuba, you can be sure that raw cigar tobacco will be exempt from the tax. That is one of the few exports they have with a demand.

All of the research is under the jurisdiction of the state. I believe, they delegate it to different Universities. It's hard to believe that something that helped build our nation is illegal when you can't even get high off of it.

In the 1990's you could fly to Cuba from Cancun. You paid for everything in cash, and they didn't stamp your US Passport--they gave you a paper visa.

Of course that is against Federal Law. 05-nono

Absolutely.

One thing that is definitely worth noting. With the decline in sugar prices, Cuba today is producing 1/4 the sugar cane they once did. If Cuba ramped their sugar cane back up to prior norms, it is estimated that the increase could produce enough ethanol to replace 20 percent of our gasoline usage. Fidel was supposedly always opposed to using sugar cane to make ethanol, but Raul is supposedly open to this.

I remember chaperoning my son and a couple of his friends on a trip to Nassau for Easter 2000. The morning we flew back was the day that Janet Reno's gumshoes went in to get Elian Gonzalez. We had a layover of several hours between planes in Miami, and I had originally planned to rent a car and drive around a bit. I got worried as to how the deal with Elian would go down with Miami's Cuban expat population, and decided that we would stay at the airport instead. Coming from Nassau back to Miami, you clear customs outbound Nassau. When I went through the line, the customs agent asked me, "You aren't bringing back any of those Cuban cigars, are you?" I wasn't, and told him so, but I couldn't help but wonder, "What's wrong with this picture?"
