RE: EFF: DRM-free iTunes is good, but DRM from Apple ain't dead

You don't ever own the rights to a recording (unless you purchase the rights to it). You officially own the rights to that iteration of that song to use personally. There is still contention over space-shifting of these digital files. But, for the most part, if you had taken your LP and transferred it to a digital file, you'd be in the clear to use it however you want to personally. However, the first-sale doctrine indirectly says that you must destroy that copy if you were to ever sell, or give away the original.
The laws are hopelessly out of date when it comes to the new technology advances. But I don't really trust the government to update them.

Everybody down to the remotes corners of the earth will soon have access to information (internet, cell phones etc) but it will be who most feaverishly protect their ability to sell or send content that will be the new rail barons.
Just like I tell you not to poo-pooh my claim that the Chysler PT Cruiser Turbo convertible will be the next collectible 65 Shelby Mustang, do not discount my claim that IP is the next global empire.

If you want your IP protected...then a system of voluntary contracts needs to be established..but..you must give the consumer something in return... Going back to Apple...I would have no problem contracting with them...I like the products...I like the service...I like the innovation...I like the quality. I think you must have to show the consumer "true" value to order to get them to agree with contracting not to steal your IP.
IP is one of the hardest concepts for me get my head around. I want to see a voluntary society eventually..but..I have to admit that IP is a really tough one to figure out in that paradigm.
