Five Physics Lessons for Obama

Read the article for more, but the topics are:
  • Terrorism (Nuclear or Dirty Bombs vs head in the oven suicide bombing)
  • Energy (Oil vs. Hydrogen Economy)
  • Nuclear Energy
  • Space (Manned space program)
  • Global Warming (Developed World vs. Developing)

Interesting read (non-polemic, for a change in pace).

edit: fixed subject line.

The only one I don't totally agree with is the Manned Space Missions.

Mainly a manned mission to Mars.

I just believe in the "Human Eye" versus the Camera .....

Sure, it is good to have Rovers and Remotes running all over Mars, but only a Human can tell or discern some sort of Life that is growing just underneath that rock the Rover just drilled a hole in.

I mean I know that finding a Beautiful Shining Martian City gleaming in the distance either by human eye or camera is slim to none, I still would like to see if Humans can be a better judge of what they are looking at, First Hand, Up Close and Personal versus the Camera Lens and it's Cold Non-Caring View of its surroundings.

If a Martian Rover where sent to Earth and it landed in the middle of the Sahara Desert, what answers would the Martians be forced to conclude from what they saw on Camera ?? That Earth is a barren waste land that could sustain no life.

After all, a Camera gave us all those Sphinx Looking Faces on the Martian Surface .... and a Camera has yet to show us if they are Truly Faces or just Mountain & Light Aberrations ....

Manned space flights serve exactly one purpose with regards to scientific research, and even that is highly speculative: They increase funding for unmanned space initiatives by increasing overall interest and funding for NASA et al.

huh?

I'm not a big fan of manned space flight at this point. It is incredibly expensive and takes away time from science experiments that could be done but get scrapped because the budget of manned spaceflight is so expensive. Sending someone to Mars will be very expensive and it will cost a whole lot more if you want to bring them back alive. The rovers on Mars have been doing good science work with a fraction of the cost. And they don't have to worry about returning to base each night for sleep.

Although I'm interested in Astronomy, manned missions cost so much more than robotic missions, and we obviously don't have the money right now. Also, you can tell the Earth has a lot of different environments from orbit. So you wouldn't have a situation where you land in the Sahara and assume the rest of the Earth is like that. Also, at least one of those "faces" on Mars became just a regular feature later on that no longer resembled a face.

I think we need to figure out how to keep astronauts in better physical shape over long periods in zero gravity, or come up with technology that gets us to Mars faster. Shielding is also a problem. I like the idea of continuing space walks and the space station because in the long run I think we will want to be able to live somewhere other than Earth. But we're not ready for trips to Mars yet.

I think that manned space flight is a necessary addition to any space budget. It brings an intangible to the table - it allows us to marvel at the human species, at a time when so many are bizarrely negative about the human condition.

Pride, marvel, patriotism, and hope (oh man, what did I just write?) don't really have a measurable return on inventment, but can be tremendously valuable and irreplaceable motivators to science.

Can this be accomplished by robots? Some of it. But could you imagine the worldwide excitement of a man on Mars?

Put me in the Support Manned Missions to Outerspace (SMMO) crowd!

Manned space missions are very important. We need to find a way to convince liberals to colonize Mars. They all believe in science, so if some wacky scientist from NASA says its okay for them to live on Mars and create the society that they've always wanted, they'll all go.

I would like to see more interest in our "Inner Space" being Fully and Intensely Explored ..... I mean Humans have been farther above the Clouds than he has been in the Depths of our own Oceans and that is a bit lop-sided if you look at Scientifically.

I have been a SCUBA Diver for over 30 Years and am an Advanced Open Water Certified and am a Search & Rescue Diver that absolutely loves diving.

You have to love it to volunteer to go Looking for Dead Bodies in '0' Visibility Water ... LOL

We just don't seem, as a world group, to be to awfully enthused about the Vast and Alien World below our very own Oceans Waves.

Now that boggles the mind when you compare the Cost of a Manned Space Flight to Mars, against heading to the Trenches and the Sea Mounts of Earth's Oceans for some real deal research .... not just drop a Robotic Camera in the water for a couple of hours a day.

There is no greater feeling than just going out and diving, diving, and diving some more for 3 or 4 days in a row ..... it is most awesome and the Sea Life is, for the Most Part, not afraid of you and will hover around you if you let them.

All you Divers know what I am talking about ... pushing the Bends Limits by using the Navy Dive Tables instead of the Sport Tables and Dive until you are freggin past out on the boat on the way back in to dock. Now that is some Peaceful Sleep !!!!!

OH YEAH !!!!!!!! 04-rock 04-bow

I am all for manned space flight. They say we do not learn much, but I don't quite buy that. I am very excited that we may land on Mars in the next 20 years.

One problem.. the same reasoning that justifies robotic space missions also justifies "robotic" undersea missions... because you can design and build a submarine cheaper if you don't have to put a man in it.

And coming soon to a sub base near you... these gizmos...

Unmanned Undersea Vehicles (UUV)

The Unmanned Undersea Vehicles (UUV) program was created with the goal of extending knowledge and control of the undersea battlespace through the employment of clandestine off-board sensors.

UUVs were intended to allow an SSN to safely gain access to denied areas with revolutionary sensors and weapons. These areas may be denied based on unacceptable risks to an SSN such as extremely shallow water, very poor acoustic conditions, or mined waters.

UUVs would provide unique capabilities and extend the "reach" of our platforms while reducing the risk to an SSN and its crew.

WMD Owl - - I like the sound of the UUV's ...

But I would still love to be the First Human Being to put a Footprint in the Deepest Point in our Oceans.

I would honestly rather do that than get a free ride to the Moon .... the Moon is easy ..... try being a Human with 100 Billion Tons of Pressure Per Square Inch on your Bootay at Freezing Temp's and more pitch black than the Dark Side of the Moon. (Energizer Bunny Flashlight included in Vacation Package of course)

Oh shoot yeah .... I believe strongly that we should legalize everything ... and do it before January 20th, 2009 !!!!! At least we can have a couple of months of fun left before "The Bi'Raq Brigade's Raid" ...

And "NO !!!!!! There are NO WMD's Buried in the Iraqi Desert ..... NO NO NO NO WAY !!!!!

Oh yeah: http://www.snopes.com/photos/military/sandplanes.asp (click link)

I always bury my $100 Million Dollar Aircraft too ..... I find it Breaks them In better than Maintenance and such wasteful foolishness.

We gonna get a SUE-PRIZE one of these old days when we really hit Pay Dirt (no pun intended) ..... Oh that's right !!!! Prez. E-Lect Bi'Raq is Viet Nam'ing Iraq for us ... it may make some little bitty tiny smidgen of difference to me if Uncle Bi'Raq had ever Served in a Forward Area Combat Post or a Front Line Unit in Combat or even held a Real and Full Time Job at even McDonalds or something. I mean he couldn't even show up as a Legislator and missed 40% of Vote Calls in his Tenure as a "No-Show" Legislator ..... both State and Federal Legislator Tenures.

What a guy this one is going to be.

But with his Super Duper Primo, Wide Open In Your Face, Terrorist Friends from every nook & cranny from South & Central America, Iraq, hte U.S., too Katmandu and Lands Abounding at 360 Degrees across this planet …. This is going to be a heck of a Fun White House --- and we thought nothing could top Bill Clinton …. sorry Billie Joe Jim-Bob Clinton, but you were simply Cannon Fodder for this Dude and His Bunch.

No wonder Hilary started lobbing Nukes at Obama and Crowd from the Get-Go in her Campaign ….

As Saintly and Wonderful as Even Hilary is, she knew this Duh-yude is bad. I can't believe his Camp is wanting her in the Office of Chief of Staff …. "YouTube will be bursting with 'Girl Fights Gone Wild' featuring Hil and Michie kickin' each others azz's all over the White House" ….

That place is Hil's Turf and she knows hidden little holes in the wall & places in there that Michie has no clue about and I can see Old Hil lurking behind one of those hidden places, Pounce Jumping Michie from it, and just crushing Michie like a Ripe Tomato. 04-chairshot 05-mafia 01-lauramac2 03-nutkick

And the more I find out about Ms. Michelle Vaughn Robinson Obama, 'That Thang Bi'Raq is Saddled Too', the more I see where we are headed before this same time Next Year. And it is pretty ugly.

Barack Obama is not a happy man underneath all those Fake Smiles and this will rear its nasty head very soon after Jan. 20th ... watch and see ... and I am being serious here ...

He is extremely troubled from deep within and these are Always the worst Presidents and His Wife being a Big Mouthed Bigot is going to cause him so much pure Hell & trouble until he will have to lock her away too shut her up.

We are in trouble folks ... and it ain't no joke.
