Kicking field goals in a town near a large body of water does not mean you can kick field goals at the D-1 level.

Katie Couric would have this boy in tears right now.

Take the time to read Coachs take on the kicking game. While both Ben and John messed up enough they did a few things correct also. The Temple team was highly rated on its special teams and Ben's punts in the fourth quarter were huge. John did an excellent job on the kickoffs, they were high enough for the coverage and placed away from the dangerous returners.

Would I have liked more consistency, without a doubt.

Always proud to be a Bronco.

RE: John Potter is the Sarah Palin of Placekickers
Part of the problem with Potter's development has to be the limited number of attempts he's had this year. Don't get me wrong ... I'd much rather score TDs than FGs, but I believe he's only had 3 FG attempts in 4 games. It's going to be hard to get your sea legs at the I-A level at that rate.

That said, a scholarship DI player - even a freshman - can't be missing chippies, especially in a game where points are at a premium.

If they all were easy, there would be no need to even have them.

RE: John Potter is the Sarah Palin of Placekickers
Potter is plenty talented, and easily has the best leg of the bunch, and the best leg since Nate Meyer was a junior/senior. His kicks are going 70 yards. Without him we're seeing kicks taken from the 20 and ran to the 40-45 yard line.

I agree with Jim, he simply doesn't get many chances..............even in practice. The majority of time kickers stand around and watch or work on their swing in the net, but they're not kicking fieldgoals and doing it in pressure situations. I personally wish Cubit would use him more, and take a few chances for 40+ yards. He has the leg, I've seen him hit 45 yarders with room to spare. I just think Cubit has a lot of belief in his offense and believes they can pick up 3 yards and a first down. He'll take 7 over 3.

Not the kid, bag on the wannabe coach that trolls here, but he didn't ask for the scrutiny. That was one of the main problems I had with that antique guy is that he pre-talked him up so much that it was ridiculous expecations, even if it is amongst a small contingent of nutty web posters.

"Potters Development"....?

Maybe I am wrong but isn't it with kickers that you either have it or you don't. Accuracy, hang time, and distance are pretty constant over 4 years with slight improvement every year. You guys should get in on the Kevin Muma sweepstakes. He was at our game yesterday with Will Schwarz...he is the best prep kicker in Michigan.

Yeah, I'd say you were wrong. The place kicking part for a freshman is a big development area, from timing, speed, and the distance perspective. I'd say he'll ramp up by mid season, that leg will win games for us before it's over and done.

What were his final stats on field goals? I can't find a box score.

I think he was 0-1 from 24 yards.

As for improvement, there are bunch of differences from the high school game. Different tees/no tees on field goals, narrow goal posts, better players coming at you. I think Potter used the college equipment his senior year in preparation, but there is some degree of slack that needs to be given. That said, I'll be wicked pissed if a game comes down to a field goal from 30 yards and in and we can't cash in.

Exactly. I'm cutting Potter some slack as he adjusts to the college game. There's enough pressure on the kid that we don't need to be piling on, unless it's on antiquity, who seems to be conspicuously absent. John's going to miss some but as CD said needs more opportunities. He'll settle in and Cubit will become more confident in using him.

This wouldn't even be an issue had not that used car salesman showed up with his over the top sales pitch and tried to convince us that a certain freshman was the second coming of Morton Andersen.

RE: John Potter is the Sarah Palin of Placekickers
Potter had several kick offs in high school go through the uprights. He's had a plus 50 yard field goal and several other long ones. There is no need to waste a scholarship on Kevin Muma who has the same sort of stats. The only reason Potter didn't go Big Ten or ND was timing, and competition. Most Big Ten schools only drop a scholy on a kicker every three of four years. They, like us give out a lot of preferred walk-ons along with an * stating you can earn a scholarship if you become our day to day guy.

I'm am not the least bit worried about John Potter, and I'm happy as hell every time the guy kicks off those booming kicks into the endzone. We haven't seen those for years, even when Meyer was here. Armer and Potter are very good, and they show it all the time. They just need to become consistent, and they will with time.

the kid will be fine and will probably end up being one of the better kickers in the league during his career. Kicker's are a different breed and throwing a freshman in to the starting role for any college team is going to result in high highs and low lows. Looking forward to seeing the kid do what he is capable of

Actually, John is a pretty tough character as stated by me more than once.

The youngster will develop! Of that I'm certain!

Short kicks from the right hash mark have been a problem for him. He'll work on upgrading I'm certain.

The only exagerations posted regarding John have been by the "naysaying lot" - - - not me.

That is the tool that I have the problem with, shut your yap and let the kid develop. You moron, the "naysaying" has been directed at you, not the kid, he doesn't need the focus on him right now.

From what I understand we have this kicker on a scholarship. He cannot make a chip shot 24 yard field goal? Regardless of what hash it's on......an "average" or walk-on kicker should be able to knock it in from that distance. This was a tight game where points are hard to come by. I cannot agree with GRPunk more. It would be different if it was a 40-50 yard attempt, but 24 yards???? Come on! I thought this guy was the second coming or something......

BTW, I don't think that John Potter has the proven leadership skills of the duly noted Governor from Alaska. Granted, maybe she cannot walk around saying, change, hope, raise taxes on the rich, change, hope, raise taxes on the rich and get a free pass by the media as a VP candidate. However, look at the things that are said about the other Presidential candidate by his own party.....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZahaLJd5dkU
I don’t see the egregious lack of leadership splattered all over the nightly news….why is that??? Oh yeah, because he can talk eloquently. 03-yawn

A party that so graciously swept reports of fraudulent lenders under the rug...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MGT_cSi7Rs

Thank you to the liberals for wasteful spending, socialist programs, moral decline and smoke and mirrors. Keep up the good work! 03-puke

Where has this guy been. 04-rock

Potter can make 24 yarders, give him time. Seen him make ones twice that. But I like your take on Mr. Hope'nChange
