Impressive! It would be nice to see Cincinnati make a move the next few years to at least knock on the door of Tier 1. The Big East a strong academic conference!

RE: U.S News College Rankings
Why is there no "Tier 2"? What sense does that make?
More important, why aren't dollar criteria adjusted for regional differences in cost of living? And why is a degree earned in 7 years by a part-time student working his way thru, worth any less than one earned in 4 years on "daddy's money"?

UC has nothing to apologize for academically. There are a variety of other ranking systems out there that place UC prominently among the country's best. As far as I'm concerned, the U.S. News and World Rankings are about as useful as tits on a boar hog.

In the past, they list the first 50 ranked schools in 1st tier and the 2nd tier from 51st to 125th ranking. The 3rd tier started 126th to 180th. The fourth tier is the remaining schools.
Now it looks like the first 130 ranked schools are classified as 1st tier, scores from 100 down to 32. It maybe if you can score a minimum of 32 you are in the 1st tier.
Cincinnati has a good shot at making 1st tier in a few years, just 5 more points.

Actually, I think they ranked the top 100 as tier 1, before they combine the tiers.

No question, we are a very strong academic university and a very underrated one. The Tier system probably is worthless to a degree, but at least it looks good if/when UC gains a Tier 1 spot!

Clearly, Georgetown has to get past the Domers, but that takes money which has not always been in much supply at the school.
The rankings do confirm that Syr and Pitt are at the precipice of a Top 50 ranking. As state schools go, I think Pitt has been underrated for a while.
Far too many Tier III schools, though, on both sides of the football/basketball issue.

Well, when we split in 2009, Georgetown won't have to worry about being in the same company as these "Tier III" football schools.

Considering Cincinnati, St. John's, Seton Hall and Depaul are only 19 spots, or less, short of a Tier 1 spot I don't know how you can criticize Tier III schools.

RE: U.S News College Rankings
These rankings show the dilema the Big East has with expansion. Big East is the weakest BCS conference among these rankings with only 50% Tier 1 schools. Miami-OH, Ohio and Buffalo are the only Tier 1 schools in the region available, but they lack the athletic facilities needed to play in the Big East. Temple, UAB, UCF are solid Tier 3 schools. ECU and Memphis are Tier 4 on academics, but have the better athletic facilities. Big East added 3 Tier 3 schools last time, so Tier 3 is probably ok with them. Buffalo and Temple make more sense with market, academics and geography to be in the Big East.

I agree with you in regards to the Tiers because BCS conference look at that. Buffalo makes no sense market wise, we have that market and they don't bring anything that the Big East needs. Temple does though, from a market stand point. That being said, it's possible that ECU and Memphis are so close to Tier 3 that joining the Big East could boost them. Cincinnati moving into Tier 1 would be one of the best things to happen because it would mean that the football schools would have 5 Tier 1 universities to carry it academically (from a perception standpoint). As much as I'm suspicious of these rankings schools and conferences hold them in high regard.

Now it's 2009? Time flies...
Actually, I've been critical of the academics at DePaul and St. John's before, rather than talking about WV and USF. WV has a different mission than Georgetown and I understand that, but large enmrollment schools like DePaul and St. John's have not stepped up academically. When a school like Lehigh has gone from nowhere to the top 40, it shows it can be done.

The academics are just fine. Heck, the Big East is close to having 3 or 4 teams be in Tier 1 by this time next year, or within the next few years.

I really could not care less about these rankings. Each school has its own strengths and weaknesses, not to mention a different type of student to which they cater. I really don't care where any expansion candidates rank academically, personally.
